You're thinking about this in too linear of a manner. You're thinking rape joke --> makes person think rape is okay. That's not what we're talking about. Rape jokes in general (not just this specific one) have a large impact on society's views of sexual assault.

Me (and other anon) are not saying that Freeman's joke will be the one thing that causes how someone views rape. However, Freeman's joke does contribute to certain viewpoints.

If you honestly think rape jokes have no impact on how society views sexual assault, then I have nothing else to say because there's no point in arguing with you.

...I never said that.

I'm pretty sure she's a girl, but, from what I've seen, she does have a tendency to look at things too myopically.

Not enough of an impact to get so upset about it, I post an essay on Tumblr about it OR to accuse Freeman of being a rapist. Especially not that joke because it was terrible.

What I'm always confused about: Yes, rape is bad, and rape jokes are in poor tase. BUT. I still think it's worse to kill another person, yet there are so many black humour jokes about where some person ends up dying, by accident or murder. Why aren't people up in arms about those jokes, too? There are tons of black comedies out there - does that mean society is pretty much accepting and amused by people dying? Is everyone who tends to have black humour, who finds black comedies funny and tells jokes about people getting maimed or killed totally cool with people getting killed? I don't think so. Nor would everyone who tells a rape joke be cool with people getting raped.

Because people and society in general take murder seriously and murder charges seriously, but not rape or rape charges. It's about the larger context as a whole.

I agree. I don't think it's cool to joke about killing people at all. Society may "take murder seriously" (depends on the case) but it's not like rape isn't a crime that almost everybody believes is horrible. Both rape and murder are bad, neither should be joked about. Or at least, shouldn't generally be joked about - I'm not the humor police. But still seems hypocritical to say, "Don't joke about rape! Go die!" Ugh.
