Re: If this is in regards to the joke,
(Anonymous) 2013-12-19 02:53 am (UTC)(link)You're thinking about this in too linear of a manner. You're thinking rape joke --> makes person think rape is okay. That's not what we're talking about. Rape jokes in general (not just this specific one) have a large impact on society's views of sexual assault.
Me (and other anon) are not saying that Freeman's joke will be the one thing that causes how someone views rape. However, Freeman's joke does contribute to certain viewpoints.
If you honestly think rape jokes have no impact on how society views sexual assault, then I have nothing else to say because there's no point in arguing with you.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-19 03:40 am (UTC)(link)...I never said that.
I'm pretty sure she's a girl, but, from what I've seen, she does have a tendency to look at things too myopically.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-19 04:20 pm (UTC)(link)Re: If this is in regards to the joke,
(I should note that I am talking about rape in a generalized stance. These guys would probably be furious and horrified if somebody dear to them was raped, but they would blow off news articles, shrug their shoulders, not give a shit about horrific crap like Steubenville and other similar examples, which are way too fucking common. But after being given a talking to about their rape jokes, they started to take things more seriously and recognize that, hey, there's a really big problem here.)
I don't think Martin Freeman is now an "OMG horrible person FOREVER" but I think that his joke does contribute to people taking rape in a general sense less seriously, and I am disappointed in him very much for that.
