Inspired by secret #1 - good/bad depictions of fandom

(Anonymous) 2013-12-20 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
Personally, one of the things I love about Galaxy Quest is it's silly, yet warm and loving depiction of fandom.

On the other end of the spectrum, there's a novel called Bimbos of the Death Sun that's a murder mystery at a sci-fi con. I really hated it for being mean-spirited and having a main character who was all "I'm a geek but not like THEM! I used to be like these people but I grew up and now I'm better!"

Both have their "It's funny 'cause it's true" moments, but the tone is so very different, and that makes all the difference for me.

Galaxy Quest is such a perfect film, and part of that is its oh so accurate but loving depiction of fandom and fans.

Try Gather in the Hall of Planets instead. Or, if you want to see a skewering of the pro side of it, Herovit's World.

Galaxy Quest is awesome. I can't think of any portrayals right now that I didn't like or thought were wrong.

I like the what Futurama does with Fry's interests in video games, Star Trek, etc. A little goofy, but earnest and enthusiastic and generally portrayed as a good thing and a sign of someone with a sense of wonder. And I thought Galaxy Quest was cool, too. :)

Oh, and I'm put off by Welcome to the NHK because it seems kind of spitefully anti-nerd in ways. Which sucks because the Netflix description sounds like something I could get behind. Can't I just have a funny show about a reclusive tinhat?

Wait, have you watched Welcome to the NHK or are you going by the description?

It's kind of spiteful, yeah, but I think it's more about using fandom (and the recluse lifestyle as a whole) as a crutch than anything else.

Like I said, I was put off from watching it.

I dunno, from what I know about it, it just seems to be saying something I've heard a million times before, which is that reclusive/obsessive people are always inherently dysfunctional in some way and not just weird people going about life in a way that makes them happy. The former type of person does exist (people being different from each other and all), but you never really hear about the latter type.

(I know there's probably some point I'm missing, but that kind of thing always rubs me the wrong way. :/)

I'm not sure if it was intentional, but when they had the episode on Supernatural of the book convention pretty much all of the attendees were dudes, for a book series with topless men on the covers...

this is tangential because it's not really a depiction of fandom, but of a fangirl.

i'd never watched or bothered to inform myself more on the last two seasons of the x-files until recently and i was somewhat pleasantly surprised with how the show paid homage to a fan of the show who'd passed away with the character of leyla harrison. that was sweet.

I really really like Princess Jellyfish's portrayal of nerdy hobbies.

Also its opening might be one of the cutest homages to pop culture ever: http://youtube.com/watch?v=8qTaW7LRW9o

Diana Wynne Jones's book "Deep Secret" mostly takes place at a sci-fi/fantasy convention and there's just a lot of affection for her fans in it, I love it. One of my favorites of hers.
