There's PLENTY of fanfic/fanart based on the movie versions of LOTR and The Hobbit. And the fandom is a mixed bag, reallly. There's the people who have only seen the movies, the people who love the books and the movies, the people who prefer the movies, the people who loathe the movies, etc etc, so I think you'll be fine. I imagine most people don't care that you aren't a purist, and it's alright to be interested in something but not know everything about it.

Anyway, if you decide to give it a go, hope you enjoy yourself! There's tons of lovely Tolkien fans.
