To be honest, unless you are in the meta-writing part of fandom, I doubt you will see much trouble. Most of the fanfiction/fanart is based in the LOTR/Hobbit movie fandom.

Also, here is a nice blog that can help you brush up on stuff you might not know! http://askmiddlearth.tumblr.com/

There's a lot of fanfic written by loremasters (referencing obscure things from the Silmarillion and letters and shit) and lots by people who've only seen the movies. If you're worried about people rejecting your fic, a lot of people just put a brief disclaimer like "I've only seen the movies/read the books a long time ago" and then the readers know what to expect. I can be picky about details a writer got wrong, but if I go in knowing they're more of a strictly movie fan it doesn't bother me. ^^

If Hobbit fandom is anything like LOTR movie fandom, a lot of people write fics and meta without reading the books. It might help to label all your stuff movie canon so people know not to expect book stuff.

I feel that way about the Silmarillion fandom. It's so scholarly, and sometimes that's great, but sometimes I don't want to discuss the twenty different versions of a story that exist in Tolkien's different notes. I want to fangirl my favourite characters and talk about my ships (and by that I mean other ships than the one or two popular ones).

(Anonymous) 2013-12-21 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
Out of curiosity, what are the popular ships in the Silmarillion?

(Anonymous) 2013-12-21 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
Most of the fic seems to be Fingon/Maedhros. And, for some reason I don't really understand, Glorfindel/Ecthelion? Some of the canon ships get a few fics as well, there are small corners that ship Melkor/Sauron and I've seen some Finrod/Curufin porn, but everything else gets mostly ignored.

Everything House of Finwe. Aside from the slash ships already mentioned, on the het side we have Celegorm/Aredhel.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-21 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly. A fair few people in Silmarillion fandom tend to be purists as well, to my mind. It's why I avoid some corners of that fandom altogether.
I'm not familiar with the Hobbit's fandom, though.

There's PLENTY of fanfic/fanart based on the movie versions of LOTR and The Hobbit. And the fandom is a mixed bag, reallly. There's the people who have only seen the movies, the people who love the books and the movies, the people who prefer the movies, the people who loathe the movies, etc etc, so I think you'll be fine. I imagine most people don't care that you aren't a purist, and it's alright to be interested in something but not know everything about it.

Anyway, if you decide to give it a go, hope you enjoy yourself! There's tons of lovely Tolkien fans.

Secret 1 - The Lord of the Rings

[Picture is a poster of the "The Lord of The Rings" movies, showing the main cast scattered around like in a collage. It looks dramatic and fantastical.]

The Hobbit has renewed my interest, so I've had the urge to get into the fandom. However, the fandom scares me. I've read the books, but I'm not super familiar with everything. And I haven't read any of the other books besides Lord Of The Rings and The Hobbit. And I don't consider myself a purist. I actually think some of the movie changes are better. Blasphemy, I know. I'd love to talk with other fans, but I'm too scared.

I only skirt around the edges of the LoTR and Hobbit fandom but they both seem pretty relaxed, and certainly going from the movie based ones no one really cares if you don't know everything about the setting(I've seen a few people get a bit narky but nothing that's caused massive wank or anything).

(Anonymous) 2013-12-21 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
From what I've seen of the fandom, they're pretty nice and welcoming. But that's mostly on Tumblr, so it's not the best sample.

Most fanfic going around is mostly set in movieverse. Some fics will allude to Silmarillion details, but still stick mostly to the movies.

I'd advise you find a basic summary of the Silmarillion (if not read the book), if you have any plans to allude to ancient history or the early lives of characters like Elrond and Galadriel.

Also, the wikis are your best friends because even the Silm did not get the latest bits of Tolkien's leftover writing and the wikis usually have the alternate plots and ideas. Also, if you can find one, a beta with good knowledge in the extra materials is great too.

But you don't have to throw yourself into dens of intellectual fan discussion, or pits of purists spouting off about how much they hate the movies. If you can find a friendly spot where people are willing to answer your questions, then you'll be set up for clarifying those details you're not clear on.

Personally I recommend going to the Hobbit Kink Meme on LiveJournal and camping yourself in the chatter post. I've found the Kink Meme to be a friendly place, and if you have questions not yet answered on the extant pages of that chatter post, I'm sure someone will answer if you ask about something. You don't even need an account, because the meme is open for Anons.

Don't be scared! Of course, other people will have different experiences, but my experience with the Tolkien fandom (on lj in the past and on tumblr now) has been overwhelmingly positive. And there are all sorts of people in, it's not just people who are purists or who have read all the books. And with the movie just out, there's a lot of movie-centric excitement going on. Since that's what you're interested in, it seems a great time to jump in!

(And it's not blasphemy to think the movies did some things better! I've been reading Tolkien since I could read and have devoured all the history stuff, and while I don't necessarily like all the changes, some of them work fantastically!)

If you ever get anxious about the seriousness of LOTR fandom, just remember FIGWIT.

Even fandom seems to refer to the character by his canonical name now, it makes me sad.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-21 04:54 am (UTC)(link)
The Tolkien fandom is overall pretty chill and polite. The purists can be loathsome but they are few and tend to stick to their own devices anyway. Just don't go meddling where you shouldn't and you'll be fine. This universe is meant to be played in. Most people like both the movies and the books! :)

[personal profile] solarbird 2013-12-21 05:02 am (UTC)(link)
The purists bug me too - I went off about that on my blog and LJ - but honestly, Tolkien wanted to establish a Germanic-style mythos to replace the lost Anglo-Saxon ones, and part of any mythos is that stories get retold and organically changed in the retelling. That people are making versions and doing it as they think is true to the message but still relevant to them is a sign of success, not disrespect to JRR.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-21 05:15 am (UTC)(link)
THIS thankyou. People who talk about respecting old material or myths are forgetting the context in which those stories were made and told. Ideas about "purity" or "originality" are thoroughly modern.

My experience of the Hobbit fandom has been for the most part positive. There are a couple of inevitable trolls around (ha! Just keep them busy until the sun comes out! ;D) but in general there are plenty of folk about that will welcome you with open arms.

I second the kink meme rec on lj if you're into shipping, (particularly slash), and the [profile] ontd_blaaargh community are a wonderful bunch of guys to chat too.

If you want someone to chat with I'm Lipstickcat over on lj (I would have de-anoned here, but I can't remember my DW password to log in...)

Oh wow, don't be afraid! Everyone in this fandom is super friendly and has a good sense of humor!

True there are elitist but that comes with every fandom.

Don't be afraid to jump in though! It's one of the nicer, laid-back fandoms I've been in.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-21 09:13 am (UTC)(link)
Also, I think movie-only and purist tend to stay in their own corners of fandom. The movie fandom is a lot bigger and more active. Most people I've met here are really welcoming and kind.

Sometimes I take a peek at the Tolkein-purist part of fandom because they write a lot of interesting meta about characters, the background of middle earth and all that. And the only fic I'll read from this section is Estel (young Aragorn living in Rivendale with Elladan and Elrohir) but that's about it, I'm more of a LotR/Hobbit movie fan than anything in the books.

The most active part of fandom is Desolation of Smaug, which is movie only people.

OP - I am an 'old' fan; been reading Tolkien since the late 80's, (I'm not a purist either, for all that) but I have friends who've only got interested in the fandom since the Hobbit. I love meeting new fans. To be honest, almost every-one I personally know and like in the fandom is really nice, so please don't be nervous.

I'm not in the Hobbit fandom but the first film was pretty different from the book (much more so than LoTR) so I don't imagine it's full of purists.
