My experience of the Hobbit fandom has been for the most part positive. There are a couple of inevitable trolls around (ha! Just keep them busy until the sun comes out! ;D) but in general there are plenty of folk about that will welcome you with open arms.

I second the kink meme rec on lj if you're into shipping, (particularly slash), and the ontd_blaaargh community are a wonderful bunch of guys to chat too.
