Don't be scared! Of course, other people will have different experiences, but my experience with the Tolkien fandom (on lj in the past and on tumblr now) has been overwhelmingly positive. And there are all sorts of people in, it's not just people who are purists or who have read all the books. And with the movie just out, there's a lot of movie-centric excitement going on. Since that's what you're interested in, it seems a great time to jump in!

(And it's not blasphemy to think the movies did some things better! I've been reading Tolkien since I could read and have devoured all the history stuff, and while I don't necessarily like all the changes, some of them work fantastically!)
