Most fanfic going around is mostly set in movieverse. Some fics will allude to Silmarillion details, but still stick mostly to the movies.
I'd advise you find a basic summary of the Silmarillion (if not read the book), if you have any plans to allude to ancient history or the early lives of characters like Elrond and Galadriel.
Also, the wikis are your best friends because even the Silm did not get the latest bits of Tolkien's leftover writing and the wikis usually have the alternate plots and ideas. Also, if you can find one, a beta with good knowledge in the extra materials is great too.
But you don't have to throw yourself into dens of intellectual fan discussion, or pits of purists spouting off about how much they hate the movies. If you can find a friendly spot where people are willing to answer your questions, then you'll be set up for clarifying those details you're not clear on.
Personally I recommend going to the Hobbit Kink Meme on LiveJournal and camping yourself in the chatter post. I've found the Kink Meme to be a friendly place, and if you have questions not yet answered on the extant pages of that chatter post, I'm sure someone will answer if you ask about something. You don't even need an account, because the meme is open for Anons.
