I haven't even watched the movie yet and only know that scene and while I think it's very pretty and well done, artistically, but her voice really kills the mood. I love Idina, but her voice doesn't fit the character and song at all, imo.

You thought so too, huh? My friend walked out of the theater complaining that whoever they got to do Elsa's voice was such an amateur who totally this scene for her. Then I went and looked the VA up and was like, "What the...?"

I think she's great as Elphabeth but that's the problem for me: All I hear when listening to that scene from the movie is "Oh, look, they put a new song in Wicked". I think musical trained singers are rarely fitting for animated movies, mostly because I think you hear that their voices are trained for a big stage and really don't translate well into a setting where you have to be really, really soft sometimes - even at the start of the song, when she is singing softly, it sound loud. And that just kills the scene for me.

Sorry, I don't like to be this person, but her name is Elphaba.

Ah, right, sorry, my brain didn't work properly on too little sleep.

Seriously?

You don't think the woman who did Defying Gravity can do a song like that?

I'm not going to call you a name or anything. I'm just... we have tastes that are completely incompatible is all I can assume.

I think it would have been perfect if it was a stage production. In the animated movie medium, I don't think she is the best choice, mostly because I don't think that you can perform a song like that for a movie the same way you would perform it on a stage.
But yeah, tastes differ and all.

SA

Also, the fact that she did Defying Gravity so brilliantly is probably the reason I felt her voice was so out of place in that movie. I expected her to turn green and fly away on a broom any second instead of building a castle out of ice.

That sounds like a problem with the audience, not the casting.

Agreed

Part of the problem for me is it's such a distinctive voice, and all I can hear is Elpheba. It just didn't work right for the character for me and sucked me right out of the movie/scene.

I can kind of see this? I thought Idina's voice suited the song beautifully, so no problems there for me, but it was very strange hearing the voice of a 40-something woman (with all the musical training and vocal maturity that comes along with that) coming out of the mouth of a character who I assume was in her late teens/early twenties.

Yeah, I felt it was too "old" for her face, if that makes sense.
