It's a good scene, in an otherwise generic movie. I'll remember that scene, and only that scene.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-21 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven't even watched the movie yet and only know that scene and while I think it's very pretty and well done, artistically, but her voice really kills the mood. I love Idina, but her voice doesn't fit the character and song at all, imo.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-21 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)
You thought so too, huh? My friend walked out of the theater complaining that whoever they got to do Elsa's voice was such an amateur who totally this scene for her. Then I went and looked the VA up and was like, "What the...?"

Seriously?

You don't think the woman who did Defying Gravity can do a song like that?

I'm not going to call you a name or anything. I'm just... we have tastes that are completely incompatible is all I can assume.

Agreed

Part of the problem for me is it's such a distinctive voice, and all I can hear is Elpheba. It just didn't work right for the character for me and sucked me right out of the movie/scene.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-21 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I can kind of see this? I thought Idina's voice suited the song beautifully, so no problems there for me, but it was very strange hearing the voice of a 40-something woman (with all the musical training and vocal maturity that comes along with that) coming out of the mouth of a character who I assume was in her late teens/early twenties.

Yeah, I felt it was too "old" for her face, if that makes sense.

It's secretly the scene I liked least in the movie, whooops. I liked her building the ice palace and I thought it was a good character moment and a fine song, but I didn't really dig it quite as much as the rest of the movie.

I loved the movie as a whole and that scene was good as a character moment for Elsa.

But my favorite scene of the whole movie is actually the "Do You Want to Build a Snowman?" scene.

BECAUSE SISTERS!!!

I totally sobbed during that scene. So good!

Yeah, I think the movie got sloppy in a lot of places, but it already has a special place in my heart just because it had some really incredible moments like this.

I do wish they'd really let Elsa belt it out here though. Idina was giving it her all and I just felt like the animators were ironically trying really hard to keep Elsa's expressions.. contained? Idk, it's still one of my favorite scenes, there's just something jarring about it.

Girls can't be expressive and pretty-Disney animation motto

It's a beautiful song and a lovely sequence and it's the best part of the movie. But it also wants to be Defying Gravity so bad that I just want to pat it on the head.

I liked this scene! It was my favourite song too! But then I don't really know the song people compare if to so I didn't gave that disorientation.

The live action version of Chip the Glasses just sounds wrong to me after growing up the animated version.

Misfire! Sorry!

This is one of those cases where I really don't understand the complaints about casting Menzel. It seems like people have a hard time separating her from Wicked, which is both funny and kind of stupid. The target group for this movie is not people old enough to have seen Menzel on Broadway, and she has a strong and distinctive voice. Of course people want her to be a voice actress.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-22 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
I'm old enough to have seen Wicked on stage, but never have. I'm sure that when I do, I'll be having the opposite problem that people are complaining about here: to me it will be Wicked: starting Elsa the Snow Queen, lol!

How is it funny and/or stupid? I have terrible facial recognition and I rely mostly on voices - for which I have a very good memory - to recognise people. And it's really not about "I've seen her on Broadway" - the only CD recording of Wicked I own and know of has Menzel in the role of Elphaba. So I will automatically connect her distinct voice to that role, no matter what. And so will a lot of other people who only own that CD and were never able to see her on Broadway.

I agree with you Op. I loved this sequence, although the only one that made me cry was "Do you wanna build a snowman?". Other than that, I found the movie pretty generic (except perhaps for the "twist", I enjoyed that too.)

(Anonymous) 2013-12-22 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
AH yes I was so excited watching this happen. She could finally just be herself and let loose and live. ELSA MY PRECIOUS QUEEN.

I love the whole movie though, so I guess I'm at odds with mostly everyone here and on tumblr.

No, I loved it too. Mostly for Elsa and for the sisters interaction, as it's something you don't get to see that often. The few plot twists pleasantly surprised me, too.

I felt for Elsa, and though her parents loved her, I would have liked to tell them parents that with powers like that, the only way to keep people safe was for her to train and confront herself to the real world, as obviously otherwise she would never get the safe reflexes to deal with stress.

I compare it to driving. The more you do and the more the basic stuff become automatic, the more likely you are to do the right thing when shit happens, because at least your brain won't have to remember "wait, how do I slow down already?".

Secret 7 - Frozen (animated film)

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2013-12-22 05:24 am (UTC)(link)
[Picture is Elsa from the CGI animated film "Frozen" summoning ice in the shape of snowflakes and swirls. She has light skin, long blond hair done in an elaborate braided hairstyle and is wearing a tiara and princess-y outfit. She looks pleased.]

In my opinion it was just an okay film overall, but I haven't been this moved by a scene in years. Her pure relief and joy made me cry.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-22 11:59 am (UTC)(link)
I haven't seen the whole film yet, but I loved this song and have probably seen it a hundred times in the past week. Mostly because there is a four year old girl who is desperately trying to get the choreography down; I think she's going to be my kid who adores the theatre. My husband and I keep having that temporary disconnect when the song starts because Menzel is all the brunette Elphaba, but by the end it matches up. The best part of the song is that it sounds like a QUEEN'S song, as it should.
