F!S, how do you deal with this?

(Anonymous) 2013-12-22 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
I'm craving information about a minor side character in my tiny fandom. Nobody else cares about him. I know next to nothing about him (I scoured the three or four passages where he showed up and all I found was a vague implication that his hair was black?) and the need for more stuff on him -- fanmade or canon, I want both don't care -- is almost physical sometimes. Like a storm picking up in my belly.

Aside from "write/draw it yourself" and "just ask around, I'm sure you're not alone" (I'm shy and untalented), what do you guys do when you have this intense craving for something in your fandom that just isn't there?

I find a good character creator/dollmaker and waste hours of my life building my idea of their appearance. And then I write pages of headcanons. And then I wish I could turn all that into an actual story and cry.

I commission it, generally. But I'm kind of a commission addict.

Uh excluding drawing them, I'll talk about them, talk about my head canons, things I've noticed, meta, screen caps, weblog things with them and hope that by taking an interest in them that others will also be interested.

Post a rant on the relevant tvtropes "headscratchers page" about the character's actions. Someone will come along and argue with you --probably throwing in some menz rights crap when they do so--, then someone else will retaliate right back by putting an SJW-friendly version on AO3, eventually you'll get a flamewar then a character community.

Or just post a prompt to writer's prompts group like: http://comment-fic.livejournal.com/ and someone else will do all that for you.

I wish I knew of another way than "write/draw it yourself". A couple of my very favorite characters are that way, and admittedly at this point a large part of it is that I've imagined so much of their backstory and so on that they're not like minor characters anymore. When I get that "storm picking up in my belly" type feeling, I usually write a drabble or some such about some particular facet of their unusual existence that no one else has written about because, well, no one else writes about them at all, despite all the potential for interesting stuff there.

I will note that writing such things is an excellent way to either find other people who are interested, or make people who were uninterested more interested. So whatever you wind up doing about it, if you can find something to do at all, I recommend sharing.

I relate to this so much! My current favorite is pretty much the same - almost nothing would exist about him in fandom if it wasn't for me. But I've tried to be as prolific as possible, and I track his tag (and related tags) on Tumblr, so I've met - and converted! - a few other fans that way. Even if you don't think you're a good writer/artist you could try just posting headcanons, meta and so on (and tagging it in the main fandom if you're on tumblr). You may be surprised at how well that works if you keep at it - there could well be other fans out there, and speaking up might inspire more fanwork.

Also when I get a big craving for my favorite I go looking for other stuff his voice actor has done. I don't know what medium your character is in so that kind of thing might not work for you though. (Maybe try fan casting if it's a prose only thing?)
