Can someone explain this to me? (BBC Sherlock)

(Anonymous) 2013-12-22 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
OK so. I remember when all of Tumblr was in love with BBC Sherlock and all who sailed her, etc, etc. Now all I am seeing (admittedly only from FS) is hate hate hate hate from Tumblr. Over ... what? Jokes that would have had them ROFLcoptering, three years ago? I read the Martin Freeman quote that people were complaining about on here yesterday, and guys? GUYS HE WAS SAYING HE'S MORE GLAMOUROUS THAN LUCY LIU. If that's not CLEARLY a joke, I mean. Really, come on now.

Are these new fans? Old fans who put the show and its creators up on pedestals that were far too high? SJWs who aren't even fans of the show to begin with, and just want to cause drama? What? It boggles my mind, I just can't understand what's going on with this. Why has the tide turned so dramatically? I honestly have never seen this happen, ever, and I've been around since USENET. If they really hate the show and all on it that much...why are they still watching? Why are they still in the fandom? Why are they WHY just WHY?

He didn't have to be an asshat and compare her to a dog to do it.

OP here

Given the sheer OTT ridiculousness of the lead-in, how is it not painfully obvious that the man is joking? What I mean is, he DIDN'T compare her to a dog! He was...trying to make the opposite point using a joke? Are people incapable of understanding that, these days?

Is the world really that PC now?

I'm not even in the fandom, BTW, I'm just going by what was on Tumblr a few years ago, and what I've seen on FS the last year or so. Particularly the remarks on yesterday's post about how he's bad inside or smth IDEK, man. This is the guy they idolized, who thought was sooper speshul and w/e, could do no wrong, and now it's gone from that to the opposite extreme? IDGI.

I think they were objecting specifically to him comparing Lucy Liu to a dog, but I might not be remembering correctly. It seems like there's been so much wank lately.

I mostly saw people complaining about his rape joke.

It's a combination of things. Up on a pedestal, hopes too high, getting to know the actors and creators better and not liking what they learn, the show itself going downhill or in a direction fans don't like, generally upset by bullshit decisions. As for why so drastically, well the love was sudden and drastic so I'm not surprised the dislike is as well.

This + Many people don't see actors as humans. They see them as a thing there for their pleasure. Also, much of this hate is cyclical. People get "fandom fatigue" and hate the fandom/actor/whatever. In 3-4 months they will be right back to loving them.

They see them as a thing there for their pleasure.

...wait...isn't this one of the major things that SJWs complain about people doing?

Nah. Because they are doing it to men. And that is totallllllyyyyyy okay.

OP

OK I googled that "rape joke" (didn't get that from the thread yesterday, I just looked up the Lucy Liu one yesterday). The "rape joke thing" strikes me as the exact same OTT ridiculous satirical w/e schtick that the fandom used to cream themselves over, whenever he opened his mouth.

I mean...He's talking about hobbits and elves....do people not get how OTT ridiculous that is to begin with? I mean, if it's not your humour (it's not mine, personally), then w/e. But it's clearly stand-up/comedy schtick, and that's what the fandom used to love him for...now it's "problematic" and SJWs are hating on him forever etc. etc.? Really?

"the show itself going downhill or in a direction fans don't like"

This was me. This was also why I bailed on the whole thing, fandom, show, etc. Life is way too short.

" As for why so drastically, well the love was sudden and drastic so I'm not surprised the dislike is as well."

Maybe. But I've seen other things that got sudden and drastic love, that didn't deteriorate into this level of absolute hate and vitriol when something happened. Is this honestly the way all fandom is going? That's my worry. I mean, what do you think this is going to do, to people who actually write this stuff? They'll end up churning out heavily-sanitized, overly-PC garbage, for fear of not upsetting the mighty SJWs.....That's horrifying, tbph.

I think you're being purposely kind of stupid about this discussion if you don't understand why rape jokes are a line for a lot of people and how rape jokes differ from other types of comedy schtick. And if you're looking at a fandom you're not involved in and drawing conclusions that this is the way all fandom is going to happen, and are horrified at the mere thought? Idk man, you seem overly invested or purposely just trying to rile people up. It's confusing tbh.

OP

No, I get that it's not funny (I even said it's not my type of humour). And yeah I'm on the outside looking in so probably don't have any right to comment on it, and maybe it just looks like it's gone from lurrrrrrve to hate overnight to me because I've missed a lot of the drama in between.

The thing is, if these people have trouble with a rape joke about hobbits and elves, wouldn't their heads explode if they listened to something like ten minutes of Bill Hicks or someone similar? That's what I don't get. I do think the whole SJW thing in a broader context is only leading to bad things, and this is only one example of it.

It's not what the guy said that nonplusses me (though I didn't think it was funny, personally) it's everyone's reactions, that he somehow doesn't have the right to say it, even though it's stupid, un-PC and over the line for some people. That's what I'm concerned about, in a broader context, not just BBC Sherlock, that's just an immediately convenient example.

Nayrt

Believe me these peoples don't watch or listen to anything outside of their tumblr echo chamber.

And meh I didn't think the joke was that funny. Not because it was a rape joke but because it just wasn't funny.

OP

Yeah, I'm with you, it was kind of stupid, which isn't my kind of humour, so I didn't find it funny. Could be you're right, tumblr is an echo chamber of SJWism, but I'm seeing a lot of this stuff seeping over into other forums (like here, with the commenters above, and in the thread yesterday), and even in RL, the last which really gives me the creeping horrors.

OP again

The other thing that puzzles me is, three years ago, the fandom would have been dying with laughter over a rapey hobbit elf joke out of Freeman's mouth. So it was OK then but it's not OK now and that's what puzzles me, if it is the exact same fans.

I'm not commenting on the rest (lacking background/context), but a LOT can change in three years to alter someone's perception of what is/isn't funny or okay. People aren't static!

Ignoring the rape joke drama (because I already said my piece about that the last time we discussed it), I really think a lot of it is just the nature of liking things on the Internet. When something's new and awesome, some people put it on pedestals that are too high, some people who are only kind of into it pretend to be more into it than they are because they want to be a part of it, and the people who really don't like it feel like isolated voices.

Then maybe some flaws in the thing become more obvious (nothing is perfect). The people who put it on pedestals fall out of love with it a little, the people who were only so-so on it are more realistic about their dislikes, the people who didn't like it feel more emboldened to make their opinions known (and as the thing gets more and more popular there's more and more of those people - especially since a lot of people are exposed to it in a way that comes with massive hype and expectations). And some people just get tired of it, and then the worm turns and everyone hates it.

So yeah, I don't think it's anything fundamentally here. More compressed and more extreme b/c of the nature of modern Internet but not fundamentally different.

I think a lot of the upset people aren't really fans at all.

You know how sometimes, you get a massive crush on a guy because he has a lot of superficially appealing characteristics? And then you start dating him, and won't shut up about how awesome he is and won't hear a word against him? And then you realize he's actually a fucking douchebag apart from the appealing characteristics and are doubly pissed. -- both be ause you're dating a douchebag, and because he snookered you into thinking he was great? And then you dump him?

Now, do you also know how sometimes, dumping him isn't enough, and instead you find yourself unable to stop bitching to your girlfriends about him, and not just about the big things, but about every single goddamn detail -- the way he clips his toenails, the way he flosses his teeth, the way he pronounces 'groceries', in order to vent all your anger?

It's a bit like that.
