good idea to make gmail account?

with all the changes lately with google/youtube etc., would you recommend opening an account on gmail? if not, alternatives?

I don't like what gmail's become, but it's still the best free email provider. Make one that you only use for email and none of google's other services.

I don't have my gmail account 'connected' to anything, i don't have anything on google+, i just have my account and that's it. You don't have to do the huge 'web' of gmail/goggle stuff if you don't *want* to - just pay attention to your settings and turn things off, etc., and you'll be fine.

I have ended up with about seven gmail accounts, all of them simply because I RP on Twitter, and Twitter won't let you have more than one account going to the same email.

I have not got much into the rest of the Google leviathan, but I do like how I can have all those email accounts connected to each other.

I'm going to be job hunting soon and everyone tells me I need a basic, professional-sounding gmail account. I have email through my ISP that's just my name, but I won't be able to take that with me if I have to move. Thing is, there's no way at this point that every possible combination of my names or initials isn't already taken at gmail. Is using your name with some numbers after it a done thing? I haven't had to look for work in about 8 years and back then I still had my grad school email address.

I think it is still a done thing (your name plus numbers) for professional/business/academic purposes (at least where I live it is vov)

although if you can find some way to use something other than numbers that would look a bit more professional, I think

(I know it's late so it's likely you won't see this, but...)

If your name is really common you could use your name or initials plus a basic word, like your major or profession or hobby or whatever. Like BSmithLumberjack@ or JaneGreenKnits@. I have a few relatives who've had to do that, due to having exceptionally common names. It's simple, easy to say and type out, and it means you have a 'professional' sounding email without having to stick a string of numbers in there.

When I was stuck trying to find a professional gmail prefix, I went with my first initial, last name, and a reasonably general area where I live. (State/province level, not city level.) The prefix takes the form of jdoe.nv -- that seems relatively uncommon, so I'd suggest trying it!
