Metroid does better in the US than it does Japan. It was also the creation of Gunpei Yokoi.

Despite Nintendo trying its best to be the "good guy" it's still a Japanese company at a time when the Japanese games industry is in decline -- in decline because of institutionalized xenophobia. So they're perfectly fine with letting the Metroid franchise go to hell because they really don't care about American sales -- why else would the Japanese industry screw us out of so many games?

And that's why Other M was such an offensive pile of garbage, because they're deliberately trying to sour US fans on the franchise so they don't have to make any more Metroid games.

That's an interesting theory. I don't really know a lot about the situation [I'm not a huge fan of the Metroid series, and the Nintendo series I do like seem to be doing just fine in terms of game quality], but I could see it. Japan as a whole has some institutionalized xenophobia as a whole, so it would make sense for their games industry to have that carry over and I *know* there have been other Japanese companies [albeit not ones in the gaming industry] that have been called out on some remarkably xenophobic policies recently with the heads of the companies standing behind those policies. So it's definitely something that's been known to happen.
