That's an interesting theory. I don't really know a lot about the situation [I'm not a huge fan of the Metroid series, and the Nintendo series I do like seem to be doing just fine in terms of game quality], but I could see it. Japan as a whole has some institutionalized xenophobia as a whole, so it would make sense for their games industry to have that carry over and I *know* there have been other Japanese companies [albeit not ones in the gaming industry] that have been called out on some remarkably xenophobic policies recently with the heads of the companies standing behind those policies. So it's definitely something that's been known to happen.
