Because John doesn't know that and that kind of betrayal can make someone very pissed. I wouldn't think it bad for him to be angry for at least a couple months. Sure you may rationally know something, but emotions are not rational.

I agree. Mourning is a deeply unpleasant experience and it's more so when the death is sudden and due to something like suicide. Source: personal experience.

Coming back from the dead and saying "Sorry I put you through hell; I just wanted it to look real," is a pretty harsh betrayal. If it happened to me I'd be relieved the person was actually alive but I wouldn't be able to forgive them.
