If you don't tag shit with popular tags, then usually the only people who will notice you are the people who are following you already.

Things on tumblr CAN explode more easily than on other sites because the tag system means that the boundaries between 'your own personal space' and 'broadcasting into everyone's living rooms' can get blurry, but as long as you don't tag original posts that you don't want to broadcast, then it's actually pretty easy to just float around comfortably in a little bubble of people who share your interests and values.
