what the everloving shit, man.

I would join you in nuking the concept of christmas right off the face of the earth and then merrily skip through the charred ruins with you. particularly after the shit my rich, entitled sister laid on me today.

oh fine. see, I'm not well off at all, but I make ends meet unless there's an emergency. today, I had an emergency. my car broke down, and I'm not sure I can get it fixed in time to go visit my family out of town. the rest of them understand. entitled sister told me it was a disaster because she bought me SO MANY PRESENTS this year and wants to give them to me in person so I should spend every penny I don't have to get it fixed, or rent a car on christmas eve. and then lols at my inability to afford a garage and says she could have bought me jumper cables for christmas instead.

there was just so much wrong with how she took everything that can't be conveyed without knowing my family but ugh. she's the same one who refuses to get me gift cards to places I actually frequent because she thinks a gift should be something that can be physically wrapped and then unwrapped by the recipient.

your sister sounds like a real piece of work

here's what you could give her: a card that says "you are entitled to one free punch in the face (self-serve)"

not nearly as bad as your mother, but yeah, that was kind of my thought almost exactly.

but you can totally physically wrap a gift card

heck you can make a kickass handmade card to go with it and fill the box with some cute knick-knacks or something

It's an inappropriate comment when a broke down car is a financial crisis, I agree. But I'd understand that she wants to give you presents in person - what's wrong with that? It's fun to see someone open a gift you got for them, and makes the act more meaningful, rather than something obligatory. And I agree about gift cards. I know for most people they are the "best" gift, but I think personalized gifts are better, and growing up I was raised that gift cards should always be a very last resort because of that.

Yeah... from what you wrote her sentiments sound like mine. Minus the comments about the car situation and insensitive jabs about money, that's bad. Just the present related stuff, I understand.

My brother and I got my mom a Kindle Fire for her birthday last month. I couldn't be there to give it to her but he was, so he put me on speaker phone when she opened it. I got to hear all of the reactions. Yes, it sucked that I couldn't be there, but I don't feel like I missed out.

In this present time of free online video chat, why does anyone have to physically be in meatspace for this? Why can't she mail the gifts with the understanding that they can't be opened until they're both on Skype? I'm sorry, but "you have to be in front of me to get my gifts" sounds self-serving. :T
