OP

In all seriousness I do feel a bit responsible. Because I kind of saw it coming. And I didn't really do or say anything that might have helped/prevented/averted/made it less worse? Although you're right, I probably wouldn't have been able to do anything, anyway.

Yea, I don't think there's much point in playing what if. People can be very set in their opinions, and what they believe isn't always easily swayed. If the fandom had issues with someone or something, it was going to happen whether you were around or not.

from having observed similar situations in fandom, they would have likely shunned you for being a naysayer/too gloomy/troll/trouble-stirrer/whatever and then hit the pedal to accelerate even harder

the people who have enough perspective and/or common sense to get out will or would have gotten out regardless of whether you warned them or not

everyone else will have to come to their senses on their own

I've seen that people who get that extreme/quasi-religious/have drunk from the cool-aid reeeally hate being told that they're delusional, wrong, etc. and will only dig in their heels deeper if you try to warn them of their behavior, with very few exceptions

they need to come to the realization from within, you can't force it

OP

Pretty much this, only in that case, I still wonder if I/we could have helped, in the very earliest stages of it all starting to go bad.

ayrt

they probably would have thought you were exaggerating, "everything's fine, why are you harshing our squee, gosh", then

I really can't see a way you could have won this, sorry op

Ditto to all of the above.

Whether there is a voice of reason or not, people who go wrong don't want to listen to it, and if you insist, they'll either kick you out or move away themselves to a place where they won't have anyone being reasonable.
