Wait, you wish you could have stuck around for years in a fandom that was steadily getting creepier and creepier, just so you could basically be standing around saying "I told you so" now? That is some seriously self-righteous vibe I am getting from this secret, OP. You don't seriously think you could have changed its direction by yourself, do you? Assuming you're reasonable and the fandom isn't, it started its decline with you already being a good influence. There is no possible way you could have reversed its slide into madness, so stop playing a tragic hero and wailing "I could have saaaaved them!!" and just consider yourself lucky to have gotten out when you did.

Actually, it was just one person, who clearly needed help, and everyone basically bailed on this person. Including me. :-( And then it escalated.....

Hm, small fandom I guess? I still seriously doubt you could have changed much. It sounds like mental illness is involved here, and that's the kind of thing that is really hard to help over the internet.

But even that is making a lot of assumptions about what sounds like a very complicated situation, so I'm just gonna say that everyone else who was involved (and of sound mind, etc) was responsible for whatever bad decisions they may have made. This isn't all on you.
