(Anonymous) 2013-12-24 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)Why bother caring about any character? None of them are real. You make them real in your head in order to actually get something out of it. Rue's hardly the first character used in this way, but people care about her because she's written in a way that makes them feel protective and affectionate toward her. The fact that you know, logically, that she'll die doesn't mean you won't get attached. Even if you somehow CAN control which characters you get attached to, most people will still choose to get attached because those emotional moments of loss or gain are the entire purpose of reading a book.
