Just curious if you read the book, OP. She was pretty well fleshed-out there IMO.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-24 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not the OP, but I didn't think any of the characters were well fleshed-out in that book. (I only read the first one.)

(Anonymous) 2013-12-24 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
I...sort of agree? I was mostly sad because Katniss was sad and also because it was a bummer to watch a cute kid die in the movie

(Anonymous) 2013-12-24 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
idk, she was cute and cheeky and she saved Katniss' life when she had no real reason to. she was tiny and didn't really have a chance but she didn't give up like some of the kids did. I like her for that.

She was adorable and clever and, while a definite secondary character, had enough development to make her interesting. Obviously she was going to die for THE TRAGEDY, but it was still incredibly sad.

And in turn, I don't understand this part of the secret: "She was a minor character who we already knew would die from the moment we met her. Why did anyone get attached?"

1. Why does knowing that she's supposed to die change anything? It was still sad to actually watch it happen.

But then I'm weird because knowing what's going to happen in a story never makes me appreciate it any less.

2. Do you choose whether or not to get attached to a character? That question just sounds so odd to me. I got attached because I liked her. That's just kind of how it works. Isn't it?

Everyone likes her because of the way Katniss looked at her. In the middle of this game of murder and chaos, Rue was innocence and a memory of home for Katniss. She made Katniss feel human again because Rue reminded her of Prim. Katniss saw herself a hunter. Prim was a healer. Literally and figuratively. Katniss needs her sister to feel human and sane. Rue gave her that little piece of Prim when Katniss needed it the most. Therefore, we the audience, feel the same way about Rue too.

She was cute, smart, brave... I agree that we barely knew her and that we knew that she was going to die, but well, I also knew that Crixus, Spartacus, Gannicus and Oenomeaus were going to die and I loved them anyway too. Sometimes you can't help it.

Secret 8 - The Hunger Games, Rue (character)

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2013-12-24 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
[Picture is Rue, from the "The Hunger Games" movie. She is a young girl with dark olive skin and curly dark brown hair reaching her neck. She is wearing a gray-brown T-shirt, a maroon jacket and a slate gray? backpack. There is a lot of vegetation behind her, like from a forest.]

I genuinely don't understand why everyone likes her so much and got so upset when she died. She was a minor character who we already knew would die from the moment we met her. Why did anyone get attached? Like, I get the basic thinking of "Oh it's horrible a little kid died," but actually loving her as a character in her own right so much that it evoked more than a "well damn that sucks" ... I just don't get it?
caerbannog: (Default)

[personal profile] caerbannog 2013-12-24 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
I'm attached because, like Katniss, she reminds me of my own sister and even though I knew she was most likely to die that doesn't mean I'm going to somehow magically not feel anything over it.

Read the book.

Can't that be enough? She may have been "minor" (in the movies, the books show a bit more of her) but the scene can still upset some one or make us sad without her needing to be a main character. Katniss was attached to her, she cared for her. It's okay for that to be enough.

(and when you think about it, Rue is VERY important later on. Katniss sparked the rebellion, but her attachment to Rue and the respect her District had for Katniss as a result is a HUGE reason people started fighting back)

Well, some of us read the book (or saw the movie) spoiler-free, with no idea whether or not the Games were going to play out as planned with all but two people dying. So I didn't know she was going to die and spent the time she was alive hoping some plot twist would come in that let her live through everything. Not knowing tends to make me find potential in characters that I might not bother to think about if I know they're going to die.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-24 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
Because she represents Prim if she had to participate.

Also, she is brave, very clever, and risks her own life to save Katniss, knowing that only one of them can win.

Someone pointed out that Katniss' alliance, mourning and revenge of Rue is what really sparked the revolution. If she hadn't done that, Thresh wouldn't have given her a pass ('Just this once, 12. For Rue!'), and if Clove hadn't have killed her at the Cornucopia, Thresh would have.

So really, Rue is one of the most important people in the HG universe - without her, Katniss would have died, and there never would have been a revolution.

She is also cute as button.

I guess I might be the only person who was incredibly disappointed in Rue because I'd hoped her "secret talent" that got her such a high rating was pretending to be innocent in order to win people over to her side, then stabbing them in the back at the last second. I kept hoping she would betray Katniss and then Katniss would be forced to kill her to survive and would feel really angsty about it. What actually happened just bored me.

Because sometimes you can't help which characters you like.
Because sometimes, even though you know the author is manipulating you, you can't help but feel what they want you to feel.
Because sometimes you want the good guys to win, even when you know they won't.

Haven't read other comments yet, so may be redundant, but --

-- am I the only one that thought Sleepy Hollow before Hunger Games? (and had a moment of "wait I missed an important episode what"?)

I thought it was sad enough, but I wasn't overly attached to her as a character because it seemed like the author was going out of her way to make Rue as angelic and innocent as possible so her death would pack a real emotional punch. Of course I understand why this was done and it served a purpose in the story so I can't really fault it but I generally don't respond much to that kind of emotional manipulation. ngl though, I almost bawled in the theater during Catching Fire when Katniss was talking to Rue's family about how she was her friend

OP

(Anonymous) - 2013-12-24 05:23 (UTC) - Expand

(Anonymous) 2013-12-24 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
You have to care about the character in order for her death to have an emotional impact.

Why bother caring about any character? None of them are real. You make them real in your head in order to actually get something out of it. Rue's hardly the first character used in this way, but people care about her because she's written in a way that makes them feel protective and affectionate toward her. The fact that you know, logically, that she'll die doesn't mean you won't get attached. Even if you somehow CAN control which characters you get attached to, most people will still choose to get attached because those emotional moments of loss or gain are the entire purpose of reading a book.

Um. Because she's the only one of the other tributes that's given much of a personality at all and it's a positive one at that? She saved Katniss's life? She managed to become Katniss's friend? The whole point was to highlight how fucked the games are?
