(Anonymous) 2013-12-26 12:50 am (UTC)(link)And so fucking what? That makes her an instant expert on deprivation? Carry on stanning her all you like, but bind devotion is just that: blind.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-26 01:10 am (UTC)(link)I think that it is extremely important that marginalised voices are heard in the mainstream.
I think we need a media environment that lets these voices be heard.
However, I don't think that anyone's voice should be disregarded and reviled because they belong to a privileged group and are concerned with the ways that they see discrimination happening in their life. Moreover, I find it really off-putting how much time feminists online spend on tearing into others for being too privileged to know what they are talking about. I'm not denying that Caitlin Moran has said and done stupid shit, but I do think that she is a valuable voice in the public.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-26 04:28 am (UTC)(link)she literally said she doesn't give a shit about the struggles non-white women face. that's shitty by any decent person's standards.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-26 04:32 am (UTC)(link)Wait, no. She said she didn't give a shit about the representation of women of color in her show iirc.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-26 05:12 am (UTC)(link)Exactly, she's a pretty terrible person. Hadn't heard about her calling people virgins as an insult. Wow. And her use of that transphobic slur is disgusting.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-26 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)it always annoys me when people make this argument, like VIRGIL AND DANTE AND MILTON WERE TOTES JUST WRITING FANFIC GUYS!!! they weren't. there's a substantial, fundamental difference between what they were doing and what fanfic is doing. like, you can point at writers who were doing something that's not really distinguishable from fanfic through history. but they're not going to be the same writers who are the big historically important ones who you'd want to invoke to defend fanfiction. retelling the same story in a different way, or using existing characters, or referencing great works, does not make something fanfiction. most fanfiction, i think, comes out of a place of pastiche or imitation, and that's something different.
i'm not even trying to detract from fanfiction, it's just always seemed like a super weak argument that relies on calling things fanfiction that just aren't
