I wish Frigga hadn't died either, but damn was she awesome in this movie. And no I don't wish Jane would die. Although I'm not a fan of the Thor/Jane pairing, movie!Jane is still pretty awesome.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-28 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
I think the Thor/Jane pairing suffers from being the only really shoe-horned in romance in the Avengers movie grouping. I mean, Tony and Pepper knew each other for years. Bruce and Betty, too. Steve and Peggy knew each other for some amount of months/years. They all had an organic feel to them, to me.

But Thor and Jane...they've known each other like...two? three? days, total? And they're super duper in love? I'm just not feeling it. (Wanting to bang, I could buy, but pining away for each other for two years or whatever just seems flat out bizarre to me.)

But I like movie!Jane.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-28 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
This! I love the other het pairings in the MCU verse (even if I'm a slasher in the fanction area of the Avengers) but I can't stand Thor/Jane. Their love is for me nothing more than lust or maybe a shortlived crush.

Jane is amazing but IMO her role would have been more interesting without a love interest or she should have been a similar background story to the comics.

Secret 4 - Thor: The Dark World (warning for SPOILERS)

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2013-12-28 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
spoilers for Thor: The Dark World

[Picture is Jane Foster, as portrayed by Natalie Portman, and Frigga, as portrayed by Rene Russo, standing in a golden palace. They are both dressed in flowing dresses, while Frigga also has some armor on. Frigga is holding a small sword in one hand and glaring at someone off-screen.]

I wish she [Jane Foster] had died, instead of her [Queen Frigga]. I was genuinely angry about it.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-28 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
I like both Frigga and Jane, but I'd rather it had been Jane too if someone absolutely had to die. I was really upset and angry when Frigga died. But of course it had to be Frigga who died to motivate Loki to help. I seriously doubt that Loki would have given any kind of fucks if it had been Jane who was killed.
elaminator: (Thor)

[personal profile] elaminator 2013-12-28 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think either of them should have died; they are both great characters in their own way. Jane is adorable and relatable, and Frigga is a BAMF and was interesting as hell considering the few scenes she was given; she didn't deserve to die. However, that's the way of things. (And I will admit to her death giving Thor and Loki some wonderful scenes together, but it still sucked.)

I didn't wish Jane had died, but I was pretty gutted by Frigga's death. Frigga was fucking awesome. It made narrative sense (and was pretty much the only possible way to get Thor and Loki fighting on the same side), but that didn't stop me from going NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

(Anonymous) 2013-12-28 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
How about we wish that neither of them would have to die to give the male character angst? (No seriously, why do you thing for Frigga to live someone else with boobs and a vagina would have to die?)

(Anonymous) 2013-12-28 10:37 am (UTC)(link)
What do boobs and a vagina have to do with anything? :/ OP made no mention of them.
nightscale: Starbolt (Loki outfit)

[personal profile] nightscale 2013-12-28 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
I'd pick neither of them tbh because I love them both. Jane is adorable and I love her awkwardness loads, and Frigga was a BAMF ninja queen who should have been given more character development before being offed to serve as motivation for Thor and Loki to work together(much as I love those scenes and they are my favourite parts of the movie I wish they had come up with a different method of getting them to ally without fridging her).

Wishing Jane had died is hardly an unpopular opinion in the Thor fandom, because the Thor fandom is hella gross like that.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-28 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure why wishing a character you dislike would die is gross. Jane isn't one of them for me, but there's been characters in other fandoms that I wish would die. Hell, there's been characters that I hate that have died and I was happy about it. They're fictional characters, not real people!

I didn't want either to die. :( Frigga was cool.

And I fucking love Jane Foster, don't even care.

I was pretty sad that Frigga died, but I wished Frigga had more screen time, and Jane to have more development outside her romance with Thor.

OR the writers could have found a new way to motivate their male characters that didn't involve gutting a female one for their angst. I'd much prefer that option.

I'm still pissed that EITHER of them died

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2013-12-28 04:18 am (UTC)(link)
I get that they needed something drastic to bring Thor and Loki together, but really? Was her death that necessary? She was developing so much value as her own character and then suddenly she becomes defined as someone's wife/mother again, and it feels like a cheap trick to heighten the drama. -_-

As for the Jane/Thor pairing - I actually feel like they could be a fantastic couple/romance, if it weren't for the fact it was so forced in the story. So I quite like them in fic when not OOC, but in canon I'm kind of meh on the pairing.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-28 04:27 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't want Jane OR Frigga to die, but of the two of them I feel it would have been a more interesting movie if it had been Jane that was killed off.

I really enjoyed the Thor/Jane romance in Thor 1, mostly because it DIDN'T seem like it was supposed to be some kind of epic god/mortal true love fairytale thing. It was a whole lot of Jane being awkward around Thor while she pursued her science shit, and a whole lot of Thor being handsome and charming and princely (to everyone around him, not just to Jane). It was believable that she would find him attractive, and her reactions to him were more like "oh my god this guy just kissed my hand, tee hee aliens are so hot! Tell me about science, Thor!"

Then in Thor 2 Jane's completely abandoned her career (let's remember she's spent at least a decade working in the sciences up to this point, struggling in a male-dominated field and she's one of the pioneers of her crazy wormhole theory) and has according to Darcy spent months/years (idr which) pining for a guy she knew for three days. Not even mourning the chance to study Asgard more, or depressed because SHIELD took away her research, or stressed and distracted after the events of the Avengers. The movie specifically paints it as her abandoning her research and her career and life and pining away because her true love had to go home. And then she stumbles across the Aether and spends a good portion of the rest of the movie passed out. She gets a few snappy lines here and there, and the chance to flirt with Thor a little bit, and that is literally the extent of her involvement in the story. Selvig comes up with the solution at the end, and Darcy and the intern have more plot-advancing scenes in the goddamn movie than Jane does.

tl;dr I am not happy with what they did to Jane at all gdi

(Anonymous) 2013-12-28 10:47 am (UTC)(link)
This is probably why I'm not a huge fan of her.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-28 04:55 am (UTC)(link)
Gaaaah I despise the type of thinking that automatically pits women against one another.

WHY say Jane should have died instead? WHY focus on the other main female character if you're unhappy about how one was killed off by the writers? HOW about you take issue with the writers rather than decide to hate on Jane in his secret? You're so sad.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-28 10:49 am (UTC)(link)
Why? Because I don't like Jane as a character. I find her annoying and bland compared to Frigga. The writing, although it could use alot of improvement as far as BOTH of those characters are/were concerned, has nothing to do with it. Thanks for judging me before I have a chance to explain MY reasoning behind my secret. You're so mature.

+1

(Anonymous) 2013-12-28 07:37 am (UTC)(link)
Me too, OP. I swear, I've watched all of the Avengers' movies, and Jane is the most irritating, bland, and pointless love interest out of them all. I don't know if it's the writing or the acting that made her so terrible, maybe both, but wow, it surprised me how much I disliked her. And she had so much potential, which makes the whole thing even more frustrating.

There are some problems I have with the other LIs, but for the most part, they stand out as their own character and serve a purpose in the plot, even if their story revolves around a dude.

Pepper took down the villain that abducted her, using the power from the experiment he forced on her against him, not to mention calling Tony out on his shit for years and earning position of CEO of Stark Industries. Betty was another science chick that was mostly defined by her relationship, but IDK, I remember liking her, and she was also necessary to the plot, being Bruce's only anchor to humanity. Peggy wasn't very likable, but AT LEAST SHE ACTUALLY DID SOMETHING THAT DID NOT INVOLVE GETTING KIDNAPPED. She took out 7+ guys and finished the zodiac mission on her own, helped Steve rescue the war prisoners, and even though I may not have liked her, she had a clear personality that stood out.

Meanwhile, Jane... liked science? She was in love with space or something. She hit Thor with her car and gave him a brush up on how to act like a human, took less than a week to fall in love with the dude she knows barely anything about, and... that was about it for the first movie?
And The Dark World was even worse. She spent over half of that movie being possessed by the Aether, causing everyone to have a tug-o-war over her like she's an object. Then she found a way out the cave she and Thor were stuck in. On accident. And I guess she does some science stuff at the end that somehow saves the world, but did it have to be HER that did it? Dr. Selvig was standing RIGHT THERE. I honest to god believe that you could erase Jane from existence and all you'd lose is some bullshit love story that wasn't believable anyway. (You'd also have to find another girl to serve as the thing everybody fights over in Thor 2, because it'd be just silly for an actual object to take that role.)

I would prefer that none of the female characters are fridged for the sake of man-pain, and I'd die for more interesting female characters in general, but anything that would get Jane and her awful romance with Thor off my screen is okay in my book.

(And before anyone starts, this has jackshit to do with shipping. I don't ship Thor with anyone. Not Loki, not Sif, not whothehellever. I spent so much time during both Thor movies being frustrated with the romance shoved into my face, there's no way I could even think about Thor being with any of the other characters.)
