Who gives a shit whether it's a huge shock?

Who gives one single solitary shit whether people are, or should be, shocked or not? That is so far beyond the point that I don't even know. Who gives a shit? Why is that the central point that we should be talking about here?

Because if it's expected then you have no right to be shocked when he does say it. In fact, you are guilty because you were fine exploiting him. And, yes, that show is exploitation. The only reason he has a show isn't because he is Phil Robertson but because he's a redneck who part of a redneck family from a small town. But as long as he did funny, dumb, "Look at this hick" things, you were fine pointing and laughing at him. But the moment he offended your beliefs, you are ready to shut him down. And that right there is wrong. Exploitation is wrong.

I'm not shocked by it. I don't think someone should be shocked by it. I don't think that many people are shocked by it. I think what he said was wrong and stupid and I disagree with it, and I think that's the central point, and that's the conversation, and it's hard for me to see why everyone's talking about someone being shocked. I don't think his show should be shut down. But I think what he said was wrong and I don't think he said those things and I don't think he should believe those things.

As regards its exploitation, well, I didn't watch the fucking show, so I wasn't exploiting him. And from an outsider's perspective, I think the main draw of the people watching him wasn't primarily to laugh at him and the family, I think it was people identifying with him and the family. That's only my read on it as someone looking from outside the phenomenon, obviously, but I think it's at least more complicated than you're making it out to be.

He and his family have their own television show, for which they are almost certainly raking in the money hand over fist. If they didn't want to be "exploited," they could've chosen not to go on TV and make a spectacle out of themselves. As I understand it, the reason they got the show was because they have a successful niche business, so they were presumably not so hard-up for money that the offer of a television contract was coercive.

(This is coming from someone who'd never heard of the man until he started spewing his offensive opinions everywhere, btw.)

An extremely successful niche business - I believe that they were all pretty much millionaires even before they started doing the show.

They are also highly educated multi-millionaires. They know exactly what they are projecting.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-28 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
That's my read, too. I've never seen the show but from what I've read in the last few weeks, the family doesn't care much about the show because they don't make anywhere near as much money from it (or merchandising) as they do their business

Nah. The moment he degraded other people, he stopped getting money thrown at him. I think that's pretty much right.

Besides, this is still a weird angle that you either have to be SHOCKED by something or you were EXPECTING it. I meet people with the expectation of being treated decently, that doesn't mean I'm surprised by the occasional asshole.

They had to put him back on the show and give him back pay. It's on the news tonight.

AYRT

My comment was directed towards the OP since it was a direct response to the secret and not another comment. The same OP who has/had a vested interest in DD and somehow never noticed that this guy is a bigot until the media pointed it out. Clearly it WAS a shock to OP and it really shouldn't have been. I could have told you he was a bigot from just having seen 2 commercials for this show.
