Yeah, huge shock that a devout Christian believes homosexuality is a sin.

It doesn't have to be surprising to be upsetting. I'm so sick of this response.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-28 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
Then why wasn't anyone upset before? I'm honestly really puzzled by this.

[personal profile] sarillia 2013-12-28 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
I'm always upset about this. And now I need to step away from this thread because I'm about to go visit homophobic relatives who think just like this guy that everyone is defending and I feel sick.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-28 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
Because there was no widely-publicized evidence of him being a bigot?

I mean, surely you're not advocating people putting all white rural Southerners on blast simply because they're most likely bigots (in your view)?

You and me both.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-28 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
The message here is that believing homosexuality is a sin is wrong but hating Christians is A-OK.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-28 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
Who's saying that? I have nothing but respect and admiration for Christians. I don't respect bigotry. There's nothing complicated in that. You just have to remember that believing homosexuality is a sin is not an integral or definitive part of Christianity.

Seriously, this is such a ridiculous line to take, and it plays into so many poisonous culture war lines of thought - it just makes me scream.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-28 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
"Bigots," not "Christians." Contrary to what you seem to think, there's a difference. Not all branches of Christianity are oppose to homosexuality.

I'm a Christian. This is not 1st century Rome and we are not being persecuted.

when folks say "I hate bigots" and some one jumps in with "YOU JUST HATE ALL CHRISTIANS" I think it's way more telling than the first statement. but nice try, sweetie.

lol ok

It must be realllllllll tough to be a majority.

This argument about poor, persecuted Christians is about as valid as when middle aged rich white guys complain about being oppressed.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-28 05:26 am (UTC)(link)
Sorry, can't hear you over the sound of missionaries at my door trying to "save" me.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-30 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
+1!

When the "majority" gets their own arguments used against them, they may realize the errors of their ways.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-28 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
It's not that he is a devout Christian as much as a redneck from a small town in Louisiana. He's a walking backwoods redneck stereotype.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-28 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
Who gives a shit whether it's a huge shock?

Who gives one single solitary shit whether people are, or should be, shocked or not? That is so far beyond the point that I don't even know. Who gives a shit? Why is that the central point that we should be talking about here?

(Anonymous) 2013-12-28 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
Because if it's expected then you have no right to be shocked when he does say it. In fact, you are guilty because you were fine exploiting him. And, yes, that show is exploitation. The only reason he has a show isn't because he is Phil Robertson but because he's a redneck who part of a redneck family from a small town. But as long as he did funny, dumb, "Look at this hick" things, you were fine pointing and laughing at him. But the moment he offended your beliefs, you are ready to shut him down. And that right there is wrong. Exploitation is wrong.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-28 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not shocked by it. I don't think someone should be shocked by it. I don't think that many people are shocked by it. I think what he said was wrong and stupid and I disagree with it, and I think that's the central point, and that's the conversation, and it's hard for me to see why everyone's talking about someone being shocked. I don't think his show should be shut down. But I think what he said was wrong and I don't think he said those things and I don't think he should believe those things.

As regards its exploitation, well, I didn't watch the fucking show, so I wasn't exploiting him. And from an outsider's perspective, I think the main draw of the people watching him wasn't primarily to laugh at him and the family, I think it was people identifying with him and the family. That's only my read on it as someone looking from outside the phenomenon, obviously, but I think it's at least more complicated than you're making it out to be.

AYRT

My comment was directed towards the OP since it was a direct response to the secret and not another comment. The same OP who has/had a vested interest in DD and somehow never noticed that this guy is a bigot until the media pointed it out. Clearly it WAS a shock to OP and it really shouldn't have been. I could have told you he was a bigot from just having seen 2 commercials for this show.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-28 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
You can be a "devout Christian" without being a bigot. Please stop conflating the two. Not all Christians think Paul was talking about same-sex relationships.

And anyway, slapping a cross on bigotry doesn't magically make it not-bigotry. But there's no reason to drag all Christians through the same mud as this guy.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-28 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
Except Christianity states homosexuality is a sin, which is exactly what he said. You can't actually be devout if you decide to leave things out.

Actual quote

(Anonymous) 2013-12-28 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
"It seems like to me, a vagina -- as a man -- would be more desirable than a man's anus. That's just me ... There's more there! She's got more to offer. I mean, come on dudes!"

Now where is THAT in the Bible?

Re: Actual quote

nayrt. "It seems ... to me" = his opinion. That's all.
