But the fact that there were almost no warning signs is part of the point. In the real world, bad guys don't wear their colors so blatantly as the Duke of Weaseltown, they're often subtle and manipulative, pretending to be something they're not. That's why Hans threw everyone for a loop, he plays the good guy while playing everyone, even the audience, like a fiddle. Having him act shifty would've lessened the impact of his betrayal.
