Actually I think the only reason the Kristoff romance is there is to be a plot point. Otherwise I agree there doesn't seem a reason for it at all; it's not backed up very well. But it does play a huge part because Anna has a choice between getting to Kristoff in hopes of getting healed (though I honestly doubt it would have worked) and sacrificing herself for her sister. If she hadn't also had the choice to just save herself, saving Elsa may not have been enough to warrant an act of true love strong enough to melt the ice.

I agree and disagree. I think as it stands, they needed the plot-point of Anna leaving the castle, but that could have been accomplished without her thinking Kristoff loved her (not that I would have been bothered by the romance if they'd done a better job establishing it and Kristoff's character, I still have so many questions about him!) -- like their friendship was solid, but I don't know if we NEEDED that fake-out with the True Love's kiss thing, because we already got it with Hans and Anna could have just once again been trying to get to Elsa to get her to reverse it or warn her or whatever.

There also could have been the act of True Love's being Elsa's to Anna' which also would have been cool. I just felt like if you removed the romance, you weren't losing much from the story (and they could have spent equal time on the sisters, because I felt like Elsa did not get as much of an arc as Anna which was the other sadface for me about the movie even though I liked it).
