Their "love song" is my favorite in the film, lol, and I thought their meet-cute was ADORABLE so I was really sulky about him being the bad guy (also because the Kristoff romance was so pointless and could have been removed from the movie without any difference in the overall plot) -- but I think it was a pretty great twist and much less cliched than making Elsa the villain which is where I thought they were going.

I like the twist the more I think about it, but I agree about their meet-cute. It was so adorable, and it just doesn't gel with the whole manipulation thing. He was adorable and not really in control (unless part of the plan was for his horse to dump him in the water after she was gone), and it was sweet. So I'm a little disappointed that it wasn't for anything. But yeah.

I don't mind the Kristoff romance, but I really wish that it hadn't come with a side order of "your friends trying to push you together despite your protests and being Right All Along." That's a huge squick for me.

Yeah, I wouldn't have minded it so much if they'd developed his character traits more. As it stands I loved their friendship, but I didn't even think their was going to be a romance until the movie started telling me (in song) that there was.

TBH, I'd thought that he was gonna wind up with Elsa, what with the whole "ice is my life" and crying at the sight of her ice palace. Like, the things that make her "weird" or scarily powerful are just things that make him think she's amazing.

I'm not sad it didn't go down that road. It's pretty cool that Elsa got to have a realized character arc that didn't need romance to fix it. But I was a little surprised.

Me too! That ice comment made me assume that was going to happen lol but I also am glad it didn't.

Actually I think the only reason the Kristoff romance is there is to be a plot point. Otherwise I agree there doesn't seem a reason for it at all; it's not backed up very well. But it does play a huge part because Anna has a choice between getting to Kristoff in hopes of getting healed (though I honestly doubt it would have worked) and sacrificing herself for her sister. If she hadn't also had the choice to just save herself, saving Elsa may not have been enough to warrant an act of true love strong enough to melt the ice.

I agree and disagree. I think as it stands, they needed the plot-point of Anna leaving the castle, but that could have been accomplished without her thinking Kristoff loved her (not that I would have been bothered by the romance if they'd done a better job establishing it and Kristoff's character, I still have so many questions about him!) -- like their friendship was solid, but I don't know if we NEEDED that fake-out with the True Love's kiss thing, because we already got it with Hans and Anna could have just once again been trying to get to Elsa to get her to reverse it or warn her or whatever.

There also could have been the act of True Love's being Elsa's to Anna' which also would have been cool. I just felt like if you removed the romance, you weren't losing much from the story (and they could have spent equal time on the sisters, because I felt like Elsa did not get as much of an arc as Anna which was the other sadface for me about the movie even though I liked it).
