I overall thought Frozen was amazing, but agree that Hans (?) sudden switch was random and unnecessary - though a pretty predictable way to get rid of a love interest. There could have been more hints, or Ana (?) could have just dumped him because she liked the other guy.

I liked what they did with his character, though I was expecting something to twist as soon as Anna (Ana?) left him in charge. But then again, I'm a cynic.

I agree that I thought they were cute together. I was expecting his "true love's kiss" to not work like in Enchanted.

I think the way that they twisted it, with the explanation was okay (that he was the last in line, etc) but letting her die like that was very villainous for somebody who opened up the castle and was giving away blankets and soup to the people in the cold.

Just don't get engaged to someone you've known for less than a day and you'll be fine.

The movie tries to make him look like a great guy, acting responsible, helpful, and kind even when neither princess is around to see. You're supposed to not suspect him of being a bad guy.

Secret 5 - Frozen (warning for SPOILERS)

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2013-12-28 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
spoilers for Frozen

[Picture is Prince Hand and Princess Anna, wearing royal clothes and standing in a boat.]

Having seen no spoilers, I went into this movie thinking he was a good guy, and that they were cute together (minus the whole 'let's get married in one day' thing).

I hate how Disney twisted his character so abruptly. Now I question my taste in men. Will I not be able to see the warning signs?

(Anonymous) 2013-12-28 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
Looking back, I think the audience is supposed to find his duet with Ana kind of suspicious? But maybe not. He does come across as trying TOO hard to be perfect, but I think the movie narrative would have been served better by having him look shifty at least once or twice or something.

lol he's a sociopath and was pretty suspicious from the start. you (and anna) know pretty much nothing about him beyond that he's got a lot of brothers, feels ignored and wants to marry anna right away.

IDK, I think it was foreshadowed subtly in the way their duet was just a *little* off in a few subtle ways.

Plus, as uncomfortable as it is to admit, someone like Anna would be an open book to anyone whose used to reading people - at least, enough of one that it wouldn't be too hard to start steering them in the direction you wanted [though I think he didn't actually expect her to go that far that fast.]

(Anonymous) 2013-12-28 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
I know there were criticisms saying there was no foreshadowing thus making it less of a "twist" and more "poor writing" but I personally felt differently.

I thought the point of him not showing any cracks was that there are manipulative, charming people in the world and sometimes only time reveals them for who they truly are. Hans appears perfect to the audience because we are supposed to see him as Anna does, and she's naive, honest, and trusting. These aren't bad things but we shouldn't assume folks are straightforward and honest just because we are.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-28 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
They kinda dropped the ball with the foreshadowing on that one.

Hans is Disney proving a point after them being accused for quite a while of the overuse of love at first sight and instant marriage. It also proves a point by turning a fairy-tale upside down: the "villain" is just a very emotionally damaged girl with no intention of hurting anyone, and the handsome, charming price is secretly the bad guy. (And then the act of true love to save someone was performed by the person who needed saving WHICH IS AWESOME, of course.)

While I actually did like them playing on their audiences expectation's about what Disney movies are "supposed" to be like and then, as I said, turning it all on it's head, I think they were a little too eager to prove that this movie was unique in all their canon (like a snowflake. Heh.) Hans needed only the teeniest bit more of foreshadowing and the twist would have still been unexpected, but would still make sense. There's only one (Hans glances up at the chandelier before he "deflects" the arrow aimed at Elsa) and it's so so hard to miss. They could have given him a slightly thoughtful expression right after Anna runs off to the coronation right after they meet, instead of him looking after her all charmed and lovestruck even with no one watching him. Just that little would have improved the twist immeasurably.

I went in thinking he was a good guy and I liked the twist, but then I guess I was twigging him to be The Bad Guy because he came off to me as too good to be true.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-28 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
I think the movie would have been fine (and better) without either male 'lead'. I cared more about the sisters and their relationship. The romance stuff felt like someone went "welp it's a Disney fairy tale movie gotta have romance!"

I did an analysis on Hans about a week ago. I'm way too lazy to type it again so I'll give a link below. But I guess I'll just say I can agree to disagree that it was completely out of the blue.

It's Disney. I wouldn't say all of their film are masterpieces. Any suspicion I had about him I shrugged off as Disney being stupid about love. I wasn't really impressed with the rest of the film so why should this be any different?

Your taste in men is fine. Wanna know why? Because he's not fucking real. He's a made up character who's not even there the entire time and isn't really built up that much.

Now, if you fell for an asshole in real life multiple times then you can say you have bad taste.

Idk, I liked what they did with his character. I'm looking forward to future viewings, to see if they put in hints that I missed.

I really like how the revelation he's not a good guy recontextualizes "Love is an Open Door" to being kind of a villain song.

I expected something to be wrong with him, just because their romance was so brief and the engagement so sudden - when Disney tends to build up and focus on them falling in love.

As with other characters, she wanted to marry a man she'd just met?! :P

[personal profile] miarrow 2013-12-28 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
Their "love song" is my favorite in the film, lol, and I thought their meet-cute was ADORABLE so I was really sulky about him being the bad guy (also because the Kristoff romance was so pointless and could have been removed from the movie without any difference in the overall plot) -- but I think it was a pretty great twist and much less cliched than making Elsa the villain which is where I thought they were going.

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2013-12-28 04:09 am (UTC)(link)
You should question the men in your life. If they don't pass muster, then don't hitch yourself to them for life or otherwise make huge life decisions just for them. And as many people will tell you, abusers (and rapists) usually don't seem like abusers from the get go. They seem sweet and charming and perfect and then turn into or turn out to be monsters. The biggest danger about them is that people trust them and have no reason to distrust, and that's why they are so terrifying and their betrayal of trust so horrifying.

It's easy to accept that if someone is too good to be true, then they probably are. But the unfortunate reality is that someone doesn't even have to be too good to get us to drop our guard.

But trashing the ridiculous ~love at first sight~ stuff is awesome. So is an actual portrayal of feudal politics in a Disney movie. Hans being a jerk that just wanted a kingdom of his own was a pretty awesome twist imo. I was expecting it, but then when he wasn't immediately fucking things up in Arendale after Anna left I thought maybe I was wrong. Then it happened and I was shocked but in a good way. Good job, Disney.

this kinda reminds me of Gaston from "Beauty and the Beast". You see him as this town hero/jerk but then he becomes very villainous. I think he and Hans should be bffs.
