changing screennames rant

(Anonymous) 2013-12-28 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I left LJ for DW over two years ago and took the opportunity to change my username upon moving. I felt the old one really wasn't me anymore. It irks me so much that people who call themselves my fandom "friends" outright refuse to use the new one. If I were to tell them to ditch my gendered firstname for a neutral or opposite-gendered one and please do the same for pronouns, I know they would pride themselves in being oh so verrrry accepting and compliant. Yet, for something way more trivial such as an username, they can't be arsed to go with a change. And it's starting to drive me nuts.

Have you specifically asked them not to use your old name? Or shared these feelings with them? If so, then they're being assholes yeah. If not, some people just get a name stuck in their head and don't really think about adjusting or don't realize it's a big deal.

+1.

If you've specifically asked them to not use your old name then they should have stopped, but if you haven't asked...maybe it's just difficult for them to remember the new name, or they're having difficulty connecting the new name with you and need a reminder.

Story of my life. It actually kind of bugs me when people call me "Nyx" instead of "Nyxie", but people seem to have gotten very attached to calling me "Nyx". Some days I consider telling people to quit it, especially since Nyx is the name of a Greek goddess and makes me feel like more of a pompous bitch than I already am, but this is one of those issues where I'm pretty sure trying to kick up a fuss would cause more trouble than it's worth.

But they're just used to your previous name?

I use different names in different places, for different things. But there's a bit of crossover between them, so I end up with fandom, gaming, and irl folk knowing me across all three. For the most part, they'll just call me whatever I am depending on the platform. Then again, I don't particularly care if they use whichever they're used to.

The actual fuck? So, do you even realize how much you're trivializing the name change portion of a transition or are you just deliberately being a self-absorbed asshole, nonny?
