I don't identify as a feminist

so I'm not the only one here, eh :D

There is a growing number of people who agree with equality but dislike the term feminist because feminism has hundreds of different categories and lots of in-fighting and they don't want to be associated with that.

...I don't know why this got posted here, sorry. It was meant to be one thread up.

Everyone identifying here as an egalitarian is aware that that label also has some very bad connotations, such as being used by MRAs and other people whose hatred of feminism comes from entitled, privileged positions (not believing real gender inequality still exists) or outright misogyny, yes?

Everyone identifying here as a feminist are aware that that label also has some very bad connotations, such as being used by TERFs and other people whose hatred of transgender people comes from entitled, privileged positions (being cis) or outright transphobia, yes?

Everyone identifying here as a feminist are aware that that label also has some very bad connotations, such as being used by "White Feminists" and other people whose hatred of non-white people comes from entitled, privileged positions (being white) or outright racism, yes?

We can play this game all day.

Yes, I read those comments. That's why I said "also." Neither term is perfect. Both have terrible connotations. But I know far more people who are feminist in name and egalitarian in practice than vice versa. From experience, if someone says "I'm an egalitarian, not a feminist," my first assumption will be "whiny cis dude," not "rightfully wary person hurt by lack of intersectionality in feminism."

Here are some valid reasons why someone may not wish to identify as a feminist. Is this the part where I get to say "educate yourself?"

This argument always bothered me. Why do people who believe in equality have to call themselves a certain thing? Can't they just... Believe in equality without attaching it to an identity?

I already identify as someone who doesn't go around acting like a bigoted dipwad. I don't need special titles.

Part of why I personally decided to start calling myself egalitarian instead of feminist was because I got mad at feminists trying to control peoples' identity by telling them that they MUST be a feminist if they believed in equality, whether they wanted to identify as feminist or not. I think that a movement that purports to be all about freedom of choice for women is being very hypocritical when it doesn't allow freedom of choice as to what label you stick on your head.

I don't identify as a feminist because too many feminists think I'm a "gender traitor" for having dysphoria that means I don't identify consistently as a woman, and too many feminists think trans women are some sort of spies for the patriarchy. I identify as egalitarian because as far as I'm aware, that's a label that isn't associated with shit like radfems and TERFs and actually has room in it for intersectionality.
