Hmm. I think it's about finding a balance between the humor and the darker subjects. People here keep talking about Marvel being light hearted and all, and compared to Nolan's work, they definitely look that way. But there's a need to deal with dark problems and still maintain that it's a SUPERHERO movie and color and flash is part of that. There are some dark moments in the Marvel movies too (Tony during his captivity, Bucky's death, Coulson's death and the reactions to it) but because they don't make everything outside of that dark and gritty, they don't drag the whole movie down with them.

I think DC overreacted to this idea that people outside fandom won't want superheroes as they are in the comics and threw off the balance. It doesn't have to be EITHER Nolan OR the campy tv show... you can blend those things and come out with a great movie.

The thing is that the dark, gritty trend isn't limited to DC movies. Frank Miller having a career is testament to that.

Yes he has for both of the big two and independantly. But as this was about superhero movies and they referenced DC, that's what I was talking about. DC seems to be ashamed of their superheroes. "Don't worry, the story will be darker!" etc. So... I'm not sure I see your point here?
