I feel like that works for DC though. If you watch Marvel superhero movies they do have a lot of humor and brighter colors.

And that's why I prefer Marvel.

Well, one of the reasons, anyway.

Secret 2 - Superman, Batman, new superhero films

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2013-12-28 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
[Picture is Superman from the movie "Man of Steel" and Batman from, uh, one of the newer movies? They are images from promotional posters.]

I really can't stand how recent superhero adaptations are completely humourless. It feels like they're trying to "justify" adults watching an inherently ridiculous genre.

Not being allergic to bright primary colours in costume design would be nice too!

Ngl, I decided not to see Man of Steel almost entirely because Superman's costume was so darkly colored.

IA for the DC movies. Especially Superman. But what about Marvel? They're full of humor and ridiculousness, and don't try to hide it.

While I love the Nolan Batman films and Man of Steel and would love Green Lantern to get that treatment, I actually do agree.

Ngl I LOVE dark Batman so I don't mind The Dark Knight trilogy. I just think it works...or maybe it's because I prefer a lot of the comics from that sort of "darker" era (for example, I enjoy Arkham Asylum: A Serious House... even though the art is hard to love.)

But I don't want every super hero film ever to be "dark and gritty" so even as a DC fan, in film I prefer the MCU overall. I don't get the hate for all the humour in those films. I had a great time at the midnight premier of Thor The Dark World precisely because the atmosphere was awesome during the lighter scenes.

DC's animated universe kicks arse though.

Idk I feel like Marvel are fully aware of the silly genre that superhero movies are, DC certainly seem to be going for a darker route with their films. But I do enjoy the Nolan Batman movies and Man of Steel so I guess it doesn't bother me really.

Well, ngl, I love the Nolanverse Batman movies, but I also love what Marvel has going on. Maybe when DC (eventually) reboots the Batman films they'll go for something more humor based, but Bruce IS (at least in some of the comics) a much darker and more serious character so I think it works for him. Marvel is a better fit for lighthearted and fun, imo.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-28 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I kinda hate Nolan's Batman trilogy and especially the sort of rabid fanboys who believe they're some pinnacle of filmmaking. Ugh no. To me they're just boring, joyless and pretentious as hell.

It's like oooh, you're into superheroes but only when it's dead serious, you don't like the campy stuff that has jokes in it because jokes are for children. Look what a mature geek you are.

Agreed. Bring back camp. I love the Marvel movies because they still have a bit of that. I'd be all for grimdark if it were actually well done, but it comes off as less mature, not more.

Hmm. I think it's about finding a balance between the humor and the darker subjects. People here keep talking about Marvel being light hearted and all, and compared to Nolan's work, they definitely look that way. But there's a need to deal with dark problems and still maintain that it's a SUPERHERO movie and color and flash is part of that. There are some dark moments in the Marvel movies too (Tony during his captivity, Bucky's death, Coulson's death and the reactions to it) but because they don't make everything outside of that dark and gritty, they don't drag the whole movie down with them.

I think DC overreacted to this idea that people outside fandom won't want superheroes as they are in the comics and threw off the balance. It doesn't have to be EITHER Nolan OR the campy tv show... you can blend those things and come out with a great movie.

I can absolutely get behind the TDK triology (except for the third one, the third one absolutely sucked; except for Selina. Selina was too awesome <3 But Bruce was so OOC I cringed hard at everything he did except when he ACTUALLY made the "Big Damn Hero" thing at the ending), because it works for Batman being gritty (not Frank Miller levels of gritty, either, but sort of a realistic gritty, yanno?). But Superman? No, no, that sucked, and he was so out of character I was really glad I didn't pay to see it in theatres. I'm not hyped at all by the Batman vs. Supes or whatever. Not even because Wonder Woman will be there (I WANT HER TO HAVE HER OWN MOVIE, GDI, IT'S NOT THAT HARD!).

Meanwhile, Marvel is doing awesome things that are also very fun. All the Avengers movies have been very entertaining and have the "comic book" feeling. And I'm kind of super hyped for Days of Future Past as well, because I want to see how that arc is handled on the big screen - I loved those episodes in the 90's cartoon, they were my introduction to the idea of a "dystopian future" when I was a wee little kid.

Is it just me or does Superman’s costume look like it would be really uncomfortable?

(Anonymous) 2013-12-29 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
I know a lot of superhero costumes in movies are just designed for aesthetics, but it would be nice if, sometimes, they were actually functional. I get sometimes they can’t be (Iron Man), but Spandex is an option in some cases and so much more accommodating to, you know, moving.

As for bright colors, well, I like them too – especially in those ginormous action sequences where there are ten things going on at once and it can be hard to keep track of all the players. If you blend in with the shadows (or the bad guys) it can be hard to tell what is going on.

It's actually funny that DC pushes to be so much more gritty and 'realistic' in their movies and new comics reboot, when DC comics for ages was always known to be cheesier, and over the top than Marvel (Marvel comics being the somewhat more realistic and grittier alternative).

I miss the old DC. I feel sad whenever someone thinks that is DC 'darker' and 'grittier' than Marvel. That's not how it always was. DC used to be proud of their fantastical storylines, happy endings, and corny heroes :-(

I'm all for dark and gritty movies, but I'm feeling a bit oversaturated by them. Probably why I like Iron Man so much.

I didn't mind the dark and gritty stuff for the Batman movies because you can do that with Batman and it can work, but I agree with the general sentiment. I think the problem is the Nolan Batman trilogy made a crapload of money and so of course DC decided "Hmm, why did everyone like these movies? It must be because they were so *~dark~* and *~realistic~* and *~gritty~*. Let's make all our movies like that now!" And then you get crap like Man of Steel. You don't have to make all of your movies dark, DC, seriously, people will still watch them! Maybe even more people will watch them because they won't be joyless slogs full of glowering that do disservices to the characters they're supposed to be featuring.

My big problem with the DC movies is that they seem allergic to their 'super' 'heroes'. Being a) super or b) heroes.

1989's Batman and Batman Returns were rather dark, but hey guess what Batman was still a hero. Same with the Batman: Animated series, which shit was hella dark for a 'kids' program. I have no idea what the Batman in the Dark Knights movie was, because he sure the hell wasn't Batman or a hero.

As someone who hates an overabundance of camp and has no nostalgic connection to any of this stuff (because the campiness put me off even as a kid), we're gonna have to agree to disagree here. At least where Batman is concerned.

I agree that not ALL comics-based films should set gritty/serious as their goal because it doesn't suit every comic book hero. For example, Superman.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-29 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
I mean it worked for Batman Begins and The Dark Knight because Batman's whole thing is being in the shadows, doing detective work, no superpowers. It's just pushing what Batman is to an extreme.

Other superhero's extreme end isn't necessarily dark. They could of done a lot with Superman being a man of the people in a recession. But dumbasses making these movies see that the 'dark and gritty' thing worked for Batman and want to copypasta that onto everything else.

I definitely think if you're going to do a superhero movie you've got to keep a sense of humor to it. I mean they're fun summer action flicks not an analysis on the meaning of life.

In DCs defense, Batman is a pretty dark character.

I actually really like the toned-down, more realistic designs. Pretty much the only thing about Nolanverse Batman I admired was that Batman's costume made an attempt at being real body armor that could withstand punches and bullets, just with bat ears slapped on top. And Man of Steel gave Superman a nice futuristic look suitable for a Kryptonian (though it hardly mattered since he could dress like the Sugarplum Fairy and still be invincible, but aesthetically I appreciated it).

But you're right about the oppressive humorlessness. I haven't seen Man of Steel yet because I could tell from the trailers that it was a life-sucking void, and I only made it through two Nolanverse movies hating every pretentious word uttered on the screen before I gave up (and the third movie has my personal hero Catwoman and future husbands Hardy and Levitt, so the depth of my hatred is great). I'll stick with DC's brilliant animated shows/movies, thanks (the ones they aren't cancelling, anyway).
