Yep. I grew up loving DCAU Batman, where there was a careful balance between humor and seriousness that drew me in on an emotional level (seriously, some episodes will make you fucking cry), but I just rolled my eyes at the Nolanverse's attempts at depth and complexity in exchange for a single shred of joy. I think it says a lot that the only thing out of the entire three movies that almost everybody respects (Ledger's Joker) is also the only one who succeeded at the balancing act of darkness and foolishness.

If you have not watched The Dark Knight Returns animated films I recommend. I didn't think I'd be happy with someone other than Kevin Conroy, but holy crap Peter Weller.
