I agree with you to an extent; I didn't care for Man of Steel for exactly this reason. The super grimdark thing didn't work and it really *did* come off as joyless and trying too hard.

My feeling is either do the gritty serious thing right or don't bother, because otherwise you're gonna bore the pants off your audience. If Marvel movies had gone that route it would've been downright laughable. Their subject matter suited a lighter feeling.

But the aesthetic worked perfectly for the Batman films; to me those were just fantastic movies independent of the superhero thing; the plot called for a serious tone.

At any rate. Batman's over and Man of Steel is one series, whereas Marvel's scheduled for 100 movies a year until the end of time. so enjoy!
