I went in expecting to sigh and roll my eyes at the romancy parts, but I surprised myself by actually enjoying it, even though I knew objectively it was kinda silly and over-sentimental. I think the reason I like the ship is because the characters seem to have the typical gender roles reversed in terms of how they act about their love interest. I can never, ever resist a good role reversal :D

I think the role-reversal thing hit the nail on the head...hes kinda mooning after her a bit, mostly cause she kills things so well, and shes kinda like "you are odd but a little cute, small person. Maybe someday we can kill things together"

Im kinda bitter cause its like romance is a necessity, but then Tauriel is awesome and i want all the things for her, be it killin stuff or an ugly but fun dwarf (i think Kili is probs a butterface by dwarf standards)

See, and your description is why I didn't think it was a romance at all. He's mooning after her, but it's not like she's all hearts and shiny over him. I read it more as her tolerating his crush, with a little rebellious dwarf tolerance on her part.
