I read a post once pointing out that the Starks' honour was an essential political necessity in the North. It made sense. Basic survival there requires that you be able to rely on your allies and neighbours, especially during the years-long winters. But this is far less true in the South, and that's one reason why Eddard failed so spectacularly as Hand in King's Landing.

Thank you. Fucking thank you. Why does no one else get that. If you're constantly backstabbing each other and only being self-serving, you are all going to fucking die come winter, in the North.

Semi on this note but not really...

...is there (has there) ever any explanation for how seasons work in ASOIAF? I don't remember if it's ever been said but...years-long seasons?

Supposedly ALL WILL BE REVEALED about that by the end...

summers and winters are definitely years long. i know they can be up to ten years, at least. i think that's all we really know tho.

i read an article somewhere that said that a planet like this with seasons that lasted years could be the result of it orbiting a binary star system. kinda interesting.

I guess that could make sense...though I don't think that they mention two suns in the books. :)
