Secret 5 - A Song of Ice and Fire/Game of Thrones

[Picture is a gray wolf from a sigil/coat of arms? from the House Stark from the book series "A Song of Ice and Fire" and TV series adaptation "Game of Thrones".]

The Starks are my least favorite house. I just feel they have too much honor and not enough brains.

Most of my friends think I'm horrible for not wanting a Stark or Dany to get the throne, but I just really find the Starks bland and I super want Stannis to be king.

I thought that was supposed to be the Starks' running fault: too much honour and not enough cunning. Isn't that why they keep getting screwed over? Probably not the best trait to have in a series about dirty politics.

If I had to pick a Stark to rule, it'd probably be Bran because he's more diplomatic than Arya. She can lead the armies. :D

Stannis Baratheon isn't the worst thing that could happen to Westeros. But I'm team Dany.

I like Starks, but I love Stannis, he would make a good king for a whole realm.

I like the Starks but can't really argue with your assessment much because part of their problem is they DO put honour above anything else to the point that it gets some of them killed.

But having said I like them, I don't think I want Sansa or Arya to end up being Queen in the North - I think both of them would hate it for different reasons. Personally.

Team Stannis all the way.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-28 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I like the Starks, but I also think they don't have brains (everyone but Arya). And I'd love Stannis would be the king, but damn that isn't gonna happen :(

(Anonymous) 2013-12-28 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Doesn't Stannis kind of share that problem? I'm half rooting for him too, but he has the same issues with inability to make politically sound decisions. His insistence on lawful justice alienates a lot of his potential allies, and he regularly comes close to doing away with any who tries to reason with him (Davos, and later Jon).

(Anonymous) 2013-12-28 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
True but the saving grace for Stannis (compared to the Starks) is he's never been slow to act and has always possessed a certain ruthlessness (seriously - he did kill off his brother instead of trying to talk him around that as the eldest he had the better right to rule) to make up for being so honor bound.

That's kind of their running "flaw". It shows how fucked up Westeros is, if "being honorable" means "getting mercilessly slaughtered". I like the Starks, but they are too incompatible with such a world. Until now, Arya and Sansa have proven they are the best of the House at surviving, but that doesn't mean much.

Unpopular opinion: Until the third book I really wanted a separation of the kingdoms. I wanted Robb to be King of the North, and Renly to rule the South, and Dany being all awesome at the other side of the Narrow Sea. Since that's not going to happen... I don't know for whom root for now.

I mean, I love Dany. But she's been making mistake after mistake since she got married and I'm here headwalling and... I'm glad she got outta there, I really am. But she needs to grow up pronto if she truly wants to be queen from ANYWHERE :/

I wanted separate kingdoms too, but pretty much Robb was the only one who wanted that, the independence of the North. Every other potential king, and Dany, wants all of Westeros. I'm still hoping for a North King though. The rest of Westeros can figure itself out, they're whackos anyway :U

My problem is that I don't want any of my real favourites to be on the Iron Throne, because I think they'd all be supremely unhappy there, Sansa especially (Stannis might like it but I think he'd probably be a bad King). Maybe it will be someone no one even knows? Personally I'm eager to see where this whole Aegon thing goes...

I'm with you on not wanting a Stark on the Throne. But Stannis is one of the (ONE of, not THE) most unsympathetic characters in the books right now, so, no, please, please, please no Stannis. He needs to gdiaf.

(i've seen all 3 seasons of the show, but i'm only at the very end of a clash of kings rn)

ugh i'm not big on the starks either. they're too caught up in their honor and then fucking ned just made stupid decision after stupid decision. i couldn't get behind him in either the tv series or the books. he meant well and all, but jfc he fucked up too many times.

i hate stannis more than just about any of them though. he's a complete cheat. like not only do you kill your brother, but you do it through someone else's black magic and you don't even have to see him die. put on your big boy pants and face your opponent in fair combat, stannis.

dany is my first choice for the iron throne. renly was my second choice. robb was actually my third. i liked robb, despite his various poor decisions. he was fiercer and more cunning than poor ned, imo.

besides dany, all we have left are douchebags.

/lots of anger

How can House Stark be your least favorite when House Frey is right there? And the Greyjoys! They're both begging to be despised! I'll give you that the Starks have more honor than brains.

Stannis frustrates me. He seems like a good man, but he'd be a rotten king. He only got this far because of Melisandre, not on his own merit.

I read a post once pointing out that the Starks' honour was an essential political necessity in the North. It made sense. Basic survival there requires that you be able to rely on your allies and neighbours, especially during the years-long winters. But this is far less true in the South, and that's one reason why Eddard failed so spectacularly as Hand in King's Landing.

Oh SHIT yes. Fuck the Starks they are the dumbest fuckers in existence. I didn't even start liking the series until Ned bit it, at which point I cheered and vowed to continue reading.

I want Dany or Tyrion to get the throne.

The Starks annoy me. Well. The boys do. Sansa does a bit, but she's in a godawful situation, so I've decided to cut her some slack. I like Arya.

Team Bolton or Team Greyjoy here (seriously, give it all to Roose with Euron as his Hand to loosen the guy up a bit) but Stannis is the one true king!

Sansa, Arya, and Bran aren't about honor. They're good people, but they don't value honor to a fault like Robb and Ned do. And it's interesting--Ned ultimately sacrifices his life out of love, doing the dishonorable thing to do so (he would have died anyway, but he could have died with the truth on his lips), Robb dies because he TRIES to be honorable, but fails. His first obligation was to fulfill an oath he made, not break it to save the honor of another woman.

If either had stuck to their guns, something might have turned out differently.

And Jon isn't particularly honorable, but he's also not particularly savvy, either.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-02 07:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Part of me wants Sansa as queen because she CAN play the game, and she's still a good person. I would also be alright with Margaery because not only is she self-aware, but she rules with love rather than fear. Maybe it's idealistic but in a world of shitty, awful people who get off on people hating them, it's refreshing.

The other part of me is saying "Anyone but Daenerys". I liked her for the throne at first, but as I read the series and watched the show, I realized that she isn't ready to be queen, nor do I think she'd make a good one. I think she has the potential to easily slip into Mad King territory, only worse, because she has live dragons.

I know it won't happen, but I want Jaime Lannister on the throne. He did sort of save Westeros from mass destruction once, but people like to forget that.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-04 08:25 am (UTC)(link)
Watching the Starks was the ultimate second hand embarrassment run. They want the power but refuse to play the game, fuck that.

Though I would prefer a Stark over Daenerys. The reason I finally gave up on the books was because of her endless bad decisions and constant praises despite of what an awful ruler she was.
