Sounds like they're just poor losers. If the pokemon is not properly banned from competing* (or hacked), then you have no reason to feel guilty. :/

*If you're not part of smogon, then their rules do not apply to you as most people are not part of it, thus is the consequences of playing worldwide random battles.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-29 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not about being sore losers. Some people actually put effort into their team through breeding and held items that it's kinda lame when you get matched up against somebody who just spams legendaries or ubers with no strategy behind it.

You can use them all you want, but as long as you accept that people are gonna be annoyed by it and your okay as coming of as a no-skill n00b.

It's the same thing with wondertrade, you are allowed to trade any pokemon but if you send out commons your probably gonna piss a lot of people off too. Especially when some people try to send out pokemon that are worth something and keep receiving a level 3 fletching.

Honestly, you can be as annoyed as you want but not everyone wants to have a carefully planned strategy and 5IV pokemon. Some people just want to have their fun battles and they're going to use legendaries and mega pokemon if that's the most powerful pokemon in their arsenal. They're going to win some and lose some like everyone else.

Plus I'd say the strategy is not so great if you get beaten out that quickly by a no-skill noob ;) Still smacks the side of a poor loser.

Same deal with wondertrade, especially when we have major events that have a lot of people just starting the game, so lvl 3 fletchling is all they have to wondertrade. Just toss it up to a loss and move on with it.

I feel really bad for that new person throwing out a lvl 3 fletchling and getting a lvl 70 mamoswine. They're not going to be able to use it for several badges at least.

4 more days until eshop and I can go online again to trade.

I don't really think it's the same as wonder trade, though. Even when somebody spams ubers, it doesn't guarantee they're going to win. I've battled load of all-legendary teams (now that Pokebank was released, however briefly), and I can beat them about half the time (I'm working on the other half :p).

(Anonymous) 2013-12-30 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, anon, I agree with you. It's been hard for me to get interested in competitive battling when EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. I decide to do a random battle, it's someone using nothing but legendaries and ubers. I just get so tired of seeing the same thing over and over.

If I was challenged by the team of "uwu" Espurrs and rodents, I'd enjoy that, because it's not just XYZ trio, Mewtwo, Mega Charizard, and Lucario. Now that the bank has come out, it's even worse, since now it's just the old gen legendaries everywhere.

I'm still learning the ropes of competitive battling, but testing out my team on ubers just gets so boring and I don't feel like I'm learning anything. And yeah, Wonder Trade gets kind of disappointing too. You can tell when you've given something to a newbie and when you've sent something good to someone just dumping junk back into the system. I don't think many newbies would have a quote saying "LF 6IV shinies."

(Anonymous) 2013-12-30 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
This. If it's something anyone could obtain with enough time, effort, and/or luck, there's no reason to feel guilty. It's not like you're cheating.

Secret 1 - Pokemon X and Y

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2013-12-29 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
[Picture is a drawing of the Pokémon Kangaskhanite with its child. They're like tough-skinned sorta dinosaur-y versions of kangaroos.]

Whenever I manage to knock out a team on the Battle Spot using one Mega Evolved Pokemon, I get anxious that the other person might be cussing me out. Sometimes I see my friends complaining about using strong Pokemon on the Battle Spot (usually Pokemon banned from OU) as if it was cheating. I think it's unfair to complain about that, it's not like they can't use those Pokemon too...

But I still feel like a horrible person.

Pic used without permission.

OU = Over Used tier in competitive Pokemon gaming, I think

Re: Notes

(Anonymous) 2013-12-29 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep! Second highest tier behind Ubers, I believe.

Minor correction- the pokemon is Mega Kangaskhan. Kangaskhanite is the item used to evolve it.

I feel like, if you're gonna choose to play against strangers on the internet, you need to expect that you're gonna go up against people who spend way too much time and effort to take the most cheesy-powerful things they have and make them even more cheesy-powerful. It'd be like going to a major Magic tournament and being surprised when a 40-year-old guy plops down a $2000 deck with a combo that locks down all your permanents and empties your library in about four turns. (That's why I never bothered with major tournaments.) That's also honestly why I've never been interested in video games with a major online component: because there's always going to be somebody who's willing to devote a lot more time and effort to the game than I am, and they're going to kick my ass, and I'm not going to have fun - so why not stick to single-player mode or just play with friends, where I will have fun?

This. All of this.

I get the frustration of how high-end competitive gaming of any kind works, I play enough online games to run into people who have bought gear or just plugged more time into the game, but unfortunately it's how a lot of games work these days. I've just learnt to let it go and have fun in my own way. And as far as card games go I learnt at a very young age to not go in for the more 'serious' tournaments.

Yep, very true. Whenever I battle, I do have a strategy and Pokemon that work good together, but if the other person takes a dozen turns to set up their team (using Barrier and Substitute and so on), I just get bored. I'm probably going to get all Pokemon OHKO'd as soon as they're done anyway. It's why I prefer to battle against friends, people who I know aren't so intense.

Don't feel bad. They need to buck up and made themselves a better Pokemon team. I know that if I entered a tournament, I'd be slaughtered as I just use my favs/starters. Pokemon should be fun, so don't let them get you down!

Sometimes I like to set up weird teams just for the hell of it (then wonder what the other person on the other end is thinking haha!)

Like 6 shiny dittos, team of espurrs all named 'uwu', all mega team, rodent from each generation team.

I don't give a fuck what the other person is feeling over my choices, *I* am having fun. Sometimes I even win too, which is a nice bonus.

I'm halfway to my all shiny espurr team *_*

I want to try one of these online battles, but I'm afraid I'll get my butt kicked. What is the general level of battlers? Insanely high? ._. I'm assuming it's pretty random, but..

[personal profile] badass_tiger 2013-12-30 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
From my experience, most people have at least EV-trained their Pokemon and most of them use Ubers. All-legendary teams aren't THAT common, but yeah, they crop up quite a bit. I wouldn't say it's insanely high, but if you don't at least EV-train your Pokemon, you'll probably get your butt kicked, yeah. There are lots of people who are obviously just having fun though, I've battled any number of people who used level 40 Pokemon.

Ugh, yeah, that's annoying! The thing about Pokemon is people will complain you're playing unfairly no matter what strategy you use. Mega Kangaskhan/Mega Blaziken/Other powerful Pokemon? Hax! Legendaries? HAXXXXX! Unusual Pokemon that people don't often play with? Well, obviously you're just running a super-gimmicky team because you don't understand REAL strategy.

It's one of those things you just sort of have to ignore, because there's no way to win with that sort of person. (Also, Kangaskhan is adorable! I'm raising one now for my team, and she is just the cutest thing.)

OP

(Anonymous) 2013-12-30 10:14 am (UTC)(link)
Yay, Kangaskhan! I never paid much attention to her before, but then I found out about her Mega Evolution's ability and I thought it was the cutest thing ever. I love how one of her sprites bounces her baby up and down, and when she's Mega Evolved, she bends down to pat her baby. So adorable <3

I can summon zero fucks to give about people complaining "OH BUT SMOGON BANS THEM". I do not care about Smogon Smogon does not create the rules Smogon is ONE SUBSET of battling.

Er, anyway, what I'm trying to say is just to use the Pokemon you want. Okay, yeah, sometimes that involves a fantastic Mega sweep! (Sometimes the sweeps can be... very interesting. Like a Magikarp sweeping a team of legendaries. And there's a video of a level 1 Smeargle taking out a level 100 Arceus. But I digress.) If people are going to kick up a fuss because, my god, you're using the Pokemon you want, they're not worth playing with.

Aw man, I love that video of a Magikarp sweeping a bunch of legendaries. I love strategies for having weak Pokemon wipe out way stronger Pokemon, like FEAR. It's my dream to defeat a load of legendaries using just Rattatas and FEAR.

smogon

(Anonymous) 2013-12-31 06:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I love the smogon tiers! I hate running across legendaries, real trainers don't use them, just look at Ash :)
