That happens a lot...

I stopped watching at around episode 42 and skipped ahead to the last two...so Riza x Roy are a mystery to me. It was just way too long and I think I got fed up when we had several infodumps around the 20 episode mark.

Do people just like Brotherhood better because it's more like the manga? I mean, I really like the manga canon because that's the first version I encountered, but I doubt I'd have been hooked based on Brotherhood alone.

It always puzzles me that this divide arouses such strong feelings -- is this how it always is when there are competing canons?

Yeah, I'm pretty sure it's an anime vs. manga thing. You would think people would tire themselves out wanking about that for ten years straight, but apparently not.

It's really weird. I mean, even the second series and the manga have been over for a few years now. You'd think people would have found something new to fight about! Or even just enjoy the parts people liked about both? Sigh.

Personally, I liked both series and the manga. They're each their own thing, so why fight about them? People just like to feel like they're "right", I guess.

I like Brotherhood more for a lot of reasons, but mostly because Olivier is animated and seeing her in the anime was awesome. And of course, the Sig Curtis/Alex Armstrong team up.

Exactly and so many great moments! That's not to say the other series didn't have any, but Brotherhood had more for me.

Oh yeah, I think it's pretty natural to prefer one version or another since they're really different! It's just a shame when people get on each other's case for liking the wrong thing, as the OP alluded to. (I don't know how widespread it is, but I've seen it on tumblr, sadly.)

I like the second anime/manga more out of proxy because I haven't wrapped up the first anime yet. I plan to because I dig FMA and really want to see how the 2003 anime handled things when the manga was still ongoing at the time.

But yes, I also loooove Olivier. She is my legit favorite character in the manga/second anime.

I watched the first anime on AS years ago and Brotherhood when it came out. By the time Brotherhood came out, I hadn't seen the first one in years. After rewatching the first series after Brotherhood, I preferred the latter by a bit. The 2003 anime is still dear to my heart though.

Ditto. Olivier is one of my all time favorite characters in anything ever. She's so fucking awesome.

I'm pretty sure that's the reason. I like both for different reasons. The original FMA anime has a special place in my heart as I saw it first. It was also the first long series I shelled out money for. Also my ships are different in FMA and FMA:B. I like that I can have two different ending for Ed and Al too. I think that's neat.

When the original FMA anime and manga were around, people pitted the two against each other, so now people pit all three. The purists won't like FMA1 and might not even like FMA:B for not being an exact replica of the manga. FMA1 lovers might not like FMA:B for being different than FMA1 and like me, have a special place in their heart for it.

Of course, I like all three. Why have one version when you can have more?

I only discovered FMA, through the manga, laaate in the print run (I think FMAB may even have already ended by then). But it seems like it must have been complicated when the first anime was the only version available in English for years, and conflicting feelings about which were the 'real' versions. I'm sort of glad I missed all that strife!

I've personally only seen bits of each anime but I think it's awesome that people can enjoy the different versions in different ways. Maybe just because I read American comics and different versions of canon happen all the time, it doesn't seem as big a deal to me? But fandom does like to argue!

There was lots of anger and silly squabbles. I haven't been in the FMA fandom for years and I don't miss the petty fights.

Fandom does love to argue. World peace it would not create.

In FMA I shipped Al/Ed and in FMA:B I shipped Winry/Ed. Those were the two big differences for me. Also, Roy/Riza more in FMA:B as I think it explores their background better; and Ling/Greed in FMA:B.

2003 is the canon I encountered first, but I got angry at it about episode forty despite being totally in love before. I did watch until the end, but I really disliked it by then. Then I checked out the manga a couple of years later, and I just... adored it.

I've never actually sat down and watched Brotherhood though. I figure since I've read it in the manga, it's not necessary to watch the anime version.

That's sort of how I feel; there are some bits that are fun to watch but it doesn't add very much if you've read the manga, and there are some parts I really miss that got left out. I wish they'd done a bit of a braver adaptation, like weaving some of the information about the character relationships that come about later in the manga into the earlier episodes, or including some late-introduced characters (Olivier, Rebecca, etc) right at the start.

It isn't necessary to watch it, but it is a good watch. It was awesome to see certain scenes from the manga animated. Plus, animated Olivier.

No, totally. I do want to get around to watching it sometime. It's just I've got such a huge queue of stuff I want to check out, that it ranks low since I've read the manga already.

This happened to me. I didn't like the direction the first series went at all. But my friend let me borrow some of her manga and I was hooked. Didn't really care for Brotherhood, though.

The two stories end up being quite different.

I like Brotherhood better because I think it ends on much happier note and I'm a sucker for a happy ending.

Also because it brings in a lot of new characters that I love. Olivier, Ling & Lan Fan, etc. Even Ed gets characterized differently.

That said, I thought 2003 had a much stronger origin story for the homunculi.

This is the basic conversation I've had -- if you care more about the homunculi plot, 2003 is better; if you care more about the political/war plot, the manga storyline that Brotherhood followed is better. I'm personally more interested in the military stuff so I didn't even get very far with 2003. I didn't have a strong impression of either anime being *better*, though, they're just different.
