It's probably a good thing I didn't stay in the FMA fandom long, then. I LOVED the first series (HUGHES) and was way late in watching the second; never read the manga, was kind of disappointed by the second series because I felt it didn't focus on Ed and Al's relationship as much. (Or at least they didn't have the same amount of screen-time together.) Many of the characters were given more character development and bigger roles to play so that was good, but I found the ending and general storyline better in the original series. It was bizarre, but...idk, I liked it. (That said, it's been a long ass time since I've watched, so maybe my memories of it are askew.)

That's why I call FMA the "elricest show" and FMA:B "ed/winry show," haha. I ship both pairings, so I like the different takes on them in both animes.

I like both because they have different endings, as well. You can take what you like from both of them and have a grand time.

Ooo, yea, Brotherhood definitely had more Ed/Winry, maybe that's partly why I didn't care for it as much. (I don't really ship Elricest, which is odd given my penchant for sibling incest ships.) I DID however love Ed and Al's relationship and the fact that they were together in the first series made a lot of difference for me.

I really liked that the brothers branched out and interacted with other people in the Brotherhood series. Because you know the love and closeness is there, but that doesn't mean they can't form new relationships.

No, there's nothing wrong with them forming new relationships and I don't think it means they aren't still incredibly close, but one of the big reasons I was drawn to and enjoyed the first anime was Ed and Al's relationship, so when they split for (what at least felt like) the majority of the series it was a let down for me. But some of the characters did get much better stories in Brotherhood, and Ed and Al did get to form some interesting new connections so it wasn't terrible or anything, just not exactly what I expected or wanted. (Different strokes and all that, though!)
