I really liked that the brothers branched out and interacted with other people in the Brotherhood series. Because you know the love and closeness is there, but that doesn't mean they can't form new relationships.

No, there's nothing wrong with them forming new relationships and I don't think it means they aren't still incredibly close, but one of the big reasons I was drawn to and enjoyed the first anime was Ed and Al's relationship, so when they split for (what at least felt like) the majority of the series it was a let down for me. But some of the characters did get much better stories in Brotherhood, and Ed and Al did get to form some interesting new connections so it wasn't terrible or anything, just not exactly what I expected or wanted. (Different strokes and all that, though!)
