Not only am I pissed that it has been canceled but that it won't air on BBCAmerican until February when it was originally scheduled to air this month.

What foolishness is happening over at BBC?

I'm so upset/annoyed about this being cancelled, I can hardly express it without foaming at the mouth.

Apparently there's some talks going on to try and continue it with outside funding and whatever, but fuck you BBC. It's your fault. This is what you get when you put a series like this in the Monday Night Deadzone and play it alongside I'm A Celebrity or whatever shit it was. B(

I honestly don't understand why you're comparing Ripper Street with Doctor Who.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-31 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, a better comparison would be with the toff-worshipping trash that is Downton. If they cancelled that in favour of Ripper Street I'd cheer.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-31 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
How is Downton toff-worshipping? I don't care much for the show, but the entire third season is basically a nonstop conga line of "lol upper-class people throwing tantrums over having to move into a slightly smaller mansion and change the way they talk to whores while the servants have actualfax problems lol"

It's just sorta...cutesy and light-hearted rather than harsh and biting with its mockery. (For the most part anyway -- they were pretty damn harsh on classism with Sybil's death.) And buried under a bunch of melodramatic meandering romantic subplots.

Also, who uses the word "toff" anymore? Hasn't that term gone the way of "cracka"?

Try again.

Downton Abbey is ITV. Ripper Street was BBC.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-31 03:52 am (UTC)(link)
Downton Abbey doesn't play on BBC, babe.

Also, forgive me, since I'm not British, but do people really use the word "toff" nowadays?

(Anonymous) 2013-12-31 12:00 pm (UTC)(link)
DA

It's not that common any more, but I've certainly heard it used.

I think OP is comparing them because Who seems to be synonymous with British TV at the moment but I found Ripper Street a welcome break from the 'everything was better in the past when everyone knew their place' Downton crap. Sadly it seems not as many other viewers do.

DA chiming in to say the same thing. Though properly for apples to apples the closest is surely Whitechapel?

(Anonymous) 2013-12-31 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sad that Whitechapel got axed. It wouldn't have been so bad after the first or second series, but to cancel on a cliffhanger is infuriating.

...aaaaand now I'm glad I never started series 3...

Clearly the solution is not to set your show in Whitechapel...

Secret 3 - Ripper Street (TV series)

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2013-12-31 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
[Picture is the cast of the TV series "Ripper Street". It shows three men and two women lined up, wearing Victorian London era clothing.]

I'm more upset at this show being cancelled than I would be if Doctor Who ended. I also think it's a more feminist show compared to current Who.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-31 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
It's cancelled? Dang it!

(Anonymous) 2013-12-31 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think they're aimed at the same audience?

I'm glad to hear it's not going to be advertised every five minutes on BBCA anymore. But sorry to hear you lost a show you liked. :/

(Anonymous) 2013-12-31 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
... anything is a more feminist show compared to Moffat's Who though, lol

Saying something's more feminist than current Doctor Who is a very low bar, though.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-31 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
...yeah

:(

...so riddle me this...

(Anonymous) 2013-12-31 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
...did this show get better after the first episode? Because the anachronisms (or what I dimly recall as thinking of anachronisms at the time) put me off, as of the pilot.

Yes. Yes it did.

Sadly, that isn't saying much

(Anonymous) 2013-12-31 07:48 am (UTC)(link)
I pissed as hell about it being cancelled too. I haven't been this disappointed by a show's cancellation in a long time.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-31 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Matthew MacFadyen was in a new TV show? How did I not know about this!?
