I honestly don't understand why you're comparing Ripper Street with Doctor Who.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-31 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, a better comparison would be with the toff-worshipping trash that is Downton. If they cancelled that in favour of Ripper Street I'd cheer.

How is Downton toff-worshipping? I don't care much for the show, but the entire third season is basically a nonstop conga line of "lol upper-class people throwing tantrums over having to move into a slightly smaller mansion and change the way they talk to whores while the servants have actualfax problems lol"

It's just sorta...cutesy and light-hearted rather than harsh and biting with its mockery. (For the most part anyway -- they were pretty damn harsh on classism with Sybil's death.) And buried under a bunch of melodramatic meandering romantic subplots.

Also, who uses the word "toff" anymore? Hasn't that term gone the way of "cracka"?

Try again.

Downton Abbey is ITV. Ripper Street was BBC.

Downton Abbey doesn't play on BBC, babe.

Also, forgive me, since I'm not British, but do people really use the word "toff" nowadays?

DA

It's not that common any more, but I've certainly heard it used.

I think OP is comparing them because Who seems to be synonymous with British TV at the moment but I found Ripper Street a welcome break from the 'everything was better in the past when everyone knew their place' Downton crap. Sadly it seems not as many other viewers do.

DA chiming in to say the same thing. Though properly for apples to apples the closest is surely Whitechapel?

(Anonymous) 2013-12-31 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sad that Whitechapel got axed. It wouldn't have been so bad after the first or second series, but to cancel on a cliffhanger is infuriating.

...aaaaand now I'm glad I never started series 3...

Clearly the solution is not to set your show in Whitechapel...
