DOES it show up a lot?

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2013-12-30 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean, it does get a lot of references in fanfic about Clint and Nat (and Coulson) pre-Avengers - and to be fair, we don't really have much else to work with. But I haven't seen it much elsewhere.

But then, I'm still busy being disappointed at how people write Thor's character (and specifically, his dialogue) after Thor 2. -_-

I have been disappointed since Thor 1 (though I have found some great Thor characterization fics).

I'm in your corner. I am so fed up of encountering dumbass Poptart guzzling Thor. It's like look, yes I get it...Thor is a bit of a jock (in the first film especially) and doesn't have the book smarts of his brother but IMO they both speak fairly formal so I don't understand why a lot of Thor's dialogue is written like he's only got a child-like grasp of the language. And I'm pretty sure Loki's confused by Earth stuff too (but doesn't get written like a fool as a result generally.) Basically cultural differences /=/ completely oblivious to the point of parody.

I love it when I read an ensemble or Asgard-centric fic and Thor isn't a shouty caption man.

Somehow I ended up mentally reading this in Thor's voice.

It was glorious.

You have no idea how much this made me laugh anon!

Glad it was glorious.

Things like how he addresses people, him using archaic speech when the movies only have him using formal but not archaic speech, him always shouting and being kind of dumb, and basically turning him into a medieval jock instead of a space-viking prince.

Everything.

Thor is not stupid. He's not always loud. He's not a man-shaped Golden Retriever.

Thor is hot-tempered and proud and battle-loving, and he's caring and hard-working and loyal. He loves deeply and strongly and he hurts for it. He struggles to do the right thing, he doubts himself, and he questions accepted truths. In the first Thor movie, it took one scolding from Jane for him to stop breaking cups. In the second, he was forgoing celebrations after battle. Thor is forgiving, but has his limits. He's trusting, but has learned mistrust. His idea of flirting with Jane was to share his knowledge of the universe, but he still smirks when a young lady 'stumbles' into him on the Tube. Heprojects his voice in Challenge or command, but otherwise speaks at a fairly low volume. The same hands that can crush the Iron Man armor unaided, can still cradle someone's face gently. He relishes battle, but has learned to give his opponents a chance to surrender first.

Thor is complex, and most fanfic writers give him the complexity of a pair of socks. I'm not actually asking for miracles, but I do wish writers in this fandom would acknowledge that a. He's adaptable; b. He thinks; and c. He's from a different place, has a different upbringing and different priorities and different perspectives - and this is not a flaw. Thor does not need to experience a typical Earth childhood - he had his own, a thousand years ago, and he's an adult now. Thor doesn't need a condescending explanation of who Harry Potter is - he has real wizards to worry about. Thor doesn't need to be taught to use an indoor voice, because his mother already taught him that.

I think it used to show up a lot, but I haven't seen it for a while in fic or on tumblr. Maybe fandom agrees that it's played out.

90% of the Thor movies fandom doesn't pay attention to anything that has actually occurred on the screen.
