Sorry OP, I really want to know...especially since Black Widow is a favourite character and I want to know more about (movie) her.

Darla: Remember Budapest, turn of the century, you were such a bad boy during that earthquake.
Angel: You did some damage yourself.

DOES it show up a lot?
But then, I'm still busy being disappointed at how people write Thor's character (and specifically, his dialogue) after Thor 2. -_-

I am so sick of seeing this line brought up over and over and over and over by the fandom. It was a throwaway joke, for crying out loud! I get that it was funny, but I don't want to have to hear about "What happened in Budapest" every time I go to look for something Avengers-related.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-31 12:15 am (UTC)(link)I'm sorry, that was mean. You're entitled to your opinion, OP. I'm just getting really sick of these ~other people like something but I don't and they need to stop liking it because I don't~ secrets. Is it just me or has there been a lot of them the past couple days? I know that it's something that's going to happen because people have a very hard time accepting that people can like something they don't but there seems to have been an influx recently.

The impression I got about Budapest from the movie was that it was intended to be one of many missions that Natasha and Clint had gone on together, not an incident of relationship-defining importance. Sure, let's hear about Budapest -- but why can't we also hear about Beirut and Zagreb and Volgograd and Algiers?
But the Avengers fandom (and I think fandom in general; I don't think MCU fans are unique in this regard) tends to do this a lot -- latch onto a single line and run it right into the ground. Genius billionaire playboy philanthropist, anyone? A one-off example of Tony Stark's lightning-fast improvisational wit, not a catchphrase. (Unfortunately, improvisational wit is a lot harder to write than repeating the same line over and over, which I think is a lot of the problem.)

but I tend to see him as one incredibly lazy writer who 'tells' rather than 'shows' when he can get away with it.

I mean, nah, it's cool, throw some incident in Budapest in your fic; I've read plenty that do it nicely. But I've seen a lot that do it all hamfisted, where it feels like they're explaining the joke. Noodle Incident, y'know.
It's kind of right up there with having the characters say the exact same turn of phrase they used once in a movie, only treating it like it's a catchphrase or something. And it's usually a really clever line in the movie, but when you just mimic it over and over in a fic...not so much.
