*continues to be incredibly curious about what happened in Budapest*

Sorry OP, I really want to know...especially since Black Widow is a favourite character and I want to know more about (movie) her.

I'd like to see more of her too but I don't seem to care about the Budapest thing as much as the rest of the fandom. Could be because I don't really care about Hawkeye.

Meh. I think it was just a Joss reference. From Angel:

Darla: Remember Budapest, turn of the century, you were such a bad boy during that earthquake.

Angel: You did some damage yourself.

DOES it show up a lot?

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2013-12-30 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean, it does get a lot of references in fanfic about Clint and Nat (and Coulson) pre-Avengers - and to be fair, we don't really have much else to work with. But I haven't seen it much elsewhere.

But then, I'm still busy being disappointed at how people write Thor's character (and specifically, his dialogue) after Thor 2. -_-

I think this is one of the least stupid tumblr memes to catch on from a random line in any fandom, actually.

Secret 4 - The Avengers (film)

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2013-12-31 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
[Picture is two screen-captures from the movie "The Avengers". Natasha Romanov, codename "Black Widow", as portrayed by Scarlett Johansson, is saying in subtitles "Just like Budapest all over again". Clint Barton, codename "Hawkeye", as portrayed by Jeremy Renner, replies "You and I remember Budapest very differently." Natasha is fighting with two handguns, Clint is fighting with a bow and arrows.]

I am so sick of seeing this line brought up over and over and over and over by the fandom. It was a throwaway joke, for crying out loud! I get that it was funny, but I don't want to have to hear about "What happened in Budapest" every time I go to look for something Avengers-related.

Yes. It's really annoying when someone likes something that you don't. Life, right? People. Personal tastes. Sooo annoying.

I'm sorry, that was mean. You're entitled to your opinion, OP. I'm just getting really sick of these ~other people like something but I don't and they need to stop liking it because I don't~ secrets. Is it just me or has there been a lot of them the past couple days? I know that it's something that's going to happen because people have a very hard time accepting that people can like something they don't but there seems to have been an influx recently.

And fucking "Coulson Lives"

(Anonymous) 2013-12-31 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sorry, but Clark Gregg's contract hasn't expired, and the man himself confirmed that his charatcer was alive days after The Avengers came out. Tumblr did nothing, and using the same petition when characters get killed off on another show (coughcoughsupernatural) is doing nothing aside from adding needless commentary to the discussion.

I'm butthurt and pretentious, I know, but I see SO MUCH of it that I'm beyond sick of it.

cassandraoftroy: Natasha Romanoff from The Avengers movie, smiling slightly. (natasha)

[personal profile] cassandraoftroy 2013-12-31 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
Did I write this in my sleep?

The impression I got about Budapest from the movie was that it was intended to be one of many missions that Natasha and Clint had gone on together, not an incident of relationship-defining importance. Sure, let's hear about Budapest -- but why can't we also hear about Beirut and Zagreb and Volgograd and Algiers?

But the Avengers fandom (and I think fandom in general; I don't think MCU fans are unique in this regard) tends to do this a lot -- latch onto a single line and run it right into the ground. Genius billionaire playboy philanthropist, anyone? A one-off example of Tony Stark's lightning-fast improvisational wit, not a catchphrase. (Unfortunately, improvisational wit is a lot harder to write than repeating the same line over and over, which I think is a lot of the problem.)

MCU fandom - especially the kinkmemes, dear lord - is one of those fandoms that runs every joke to death, resurrects it as a zombie, bores the zombie back to death, and then uses the corpse to put bruises on a dead Lipizzaner.

Lines like that can be seen either as a cheat (referencing a major shared character moment without the work of actually telling about it or showing it or in any way expanding on it) or it can be seen as a gift to fans, to do with as they will in fic, if it's used sparingly.

If Joss Whedon wrote it, it's both.

but I tend to see him as one incredibly lazy writer who 'tells' rather than 'shows' when he can get away with it.

OP this is one of the most important lines in the Clintasha shipper fandom. It spawned fics ideas and head canon. To us its not some throwaway joke...its part of our speactulation of headcanon for our couple. That's why its up. Its part of our shipper culture.

Yeeeaaah, I kinda feel this way too.

I mean, nah, it's cool, throw some incident in Budapest in your fic; I've read plenty that do it nicely. But I've seen a lot that do it all hamfisted, where it feels like they're explaining the joke. Noodle Incident, y'know.

It's kind of right up there with having the characters say the exact same turn of phrase they used once in a movie, only treating it like it's a catchphrase or something. And it's usually a really clever line in the movie, but when you just mimic it over and over in a fic...not so much.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-31 04:53 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not nearly as sick of this as I am "Kneel", "Billionaire genius playboy philanthropist", and "I have an army/we have a hulk". But I think this one is definitely up there on the list of jokes that need to just stop.

Tumblr doesn't really know the meaning of 'throwaway joke', unfortunately.
