I only watch the show, so I don't get this pairing. Is it pure fandom straw-grasping, or do the books offer more on it?

Also, lol. Arya and Tyrion would be disappointed in the importance you place on height, OP. Go on and be a tiny badass.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-31 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
It's fandom straw grasping.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-31 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
Not according to GRRM.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-31 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
His beauty and the beast comparisons? I still wouldn't count on it happening.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-31 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think it's going to happen, I don't want it to happen, I don't ship it.

But I think it's fair to say that they have a really complicated relationship that's also, in some ways, really close, and that there's a part of both of their feelings that could be called romantic. It's not something that it would be good for either of them to pursue, and in my mind it has more to do with the extreme situations they're placed in than anything else, but it's not like the people who ship it are building castles in air.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-31 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
No, the show has more there than the books. I would say the fandom is crazy, but I'm not terribly opposed to Littlefinger/Sansa (but Littlefinger is also my ASOIAF fandom bicycle) so I probably shouldn't talk...

(Anonymous) 2013-12-31 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
Don't you mean the show has LESS?

(Anonymous) 2013-12-31 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
Buh, yes, I cannot brain today.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-31 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
There's more in the books. The show cut out 90% if their scenes together.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-31 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
100% straw grasping. Unless a child being sexually menaced by the disfigured and mentally disturbed middle-aged manservant/bodyguard of a Mad King who is holding the child hostage is somehow romantic.

I mean, I've seen plenty of people shipped things because they're fucked up, and I get that, but everyone I've ever encountered who ships this seems to think it's some kind of epic, Disney love story. IDGI.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-31 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
Lol no. GRRM has confirmed that there's something between them. It's deliberate on his part.

You also act as if Sandor a.) likes working for Joffrey and b.) didn't protect her when he could.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-31 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
didn't protect her when he could.

LOL NO yourself. Sansa was a political prisoner. If she'd died, the Lannisters would have lost a powerful bargaining chip. The Hound worked for the Lannisters. He was keeping an asset safe. And then sexually menacing it in his spare time.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-31 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
You're so in denial it hurts. Sandor wanted to keep her safe even when he stopped working for them.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-31 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not in denial, I'm not invested in those two characters enough to gaf at all. But I know what I've read, and I know what I've seen. And you are full of shit.

Just because you're using wordy words like "sexually menaced" doesn't mean YOU aren't grasping at straws, honey.

Besides, one person's sexual menace is another person's romantic intensity. YMMV. Obviously.

Doesn't she keep his cloak or something in the books...

(Anonymous) 2013-12-31 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
Yep. And thinks "I wish the Hound were here" while holding it.

But noooo it's just fandom

(Anonymous) 2013-12-31 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
I think it's Stockholm syndrome.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-31 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
If that was the case she'd have fallen for Tyrion as well which she didn't.

Sigh. I feel like the relationship between Sandor and Sansa has been reduced to half the fandom(or the shippers) arguing that Sandor and Sansa have this genuine romantic thing going on, and the other half, who are squicked out by the pairing, arguing that there was nothing between the two, and the canon relationship between the two characters gets completely swept under the rug and ignored. Sandor and Sansa do have a special relationship in the books (although I wouldn't argue it's a romantic one, or a staggeringly important one), in which they're able to see the good in the other, and sympathize with each other, despite being so different from each other. I also think Sansa helped Sandor find a bit more of his human side, while Sandor opened up Sansa's eyes to the fact that goodness can be found in things that are not beautiful
Anyways. The 'Sansan' ship gives me a headache, solely because it's made Sansa/Sandor this over the top thing in fandom

I actually think there's a certain amount of parallel between Sansa and the Hound, and between Jaime and Brienne. Sansa and Jaime both have very specific and personal ideas of what a knight is and what it means to be one. Then there's the introduction of these other type of knight into their lives, who isn't a knight in the official cultural (religiously anointed and sworn) sense, but nonetheless is their protector at a time when they are both in captivity and very vulnerable. And it makes them have to reconsider the function of knighthood. I think Jaime and Brienne's relationship is more important (both to the characters and to the plot), but similar things are going on in both.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-31 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
I think that kind of reconsideration - seeing things from another angle, from another point of view, usually from the point of view of someone who's less powerful or in some way an outcast, often as a result of undergoing personal misfortune or suffering - is central to a lot of characters, storylines, and relationships in ASOIAF in general.

I definitely agree about this specific comparison, that's really good analysis.

Okay, I can completely agree with that and still vehemently NOT ship them. They both had ultimately positive effects on each other, but in no way, shape, or form should they paired in the long run.
