How do you respond?

(Anonymous) 2013-12-31 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
Say someone fills a prompt you've left on a kink meme or similar, and that's great because it's a slow-moving community, and you're glad it's getting attention, only...

...the fill is terrible. It's OOC and otherwise generally poorly written. It's even the opposite of what you find sexy.

Wat do, f!s?

You could just say "Thank you for filling my prompt!" and leave it at that? If that doesn't seem like enough, maybe try to find one thing about the fic that isn't awful and say "I like how you wrote [thing that isn't awful]."

Or you could not respond at all. That works too.

yeah, like anon above said

give them a thank you that skillfully avoids any mention to the quality of the writing

or lie through your teeth, if that's more your speed

but definitely acknowledge and thank the effort

"Thanks for the effort"

Like with all gifts you get in life* say: thank you.

* with the exception of something given to be mean or insulting, but I wouldn't call that a gift. Also random lesson about Norway: gift is the Norwegian word for poison and married...

Marriage = poison? I find this hilarious and great.

I feel this way about a fic I was recently gifted. I just said "thanks for writing something for me" which is true, I'm glad they took the time and participated in the exchange. But it was TERRIBLE.

I think that's a great thing to say. Thanks for taking the time to write this for me. :)

*paranoid this is about my recent kink meme fill on a small, slow-moving kink community*

Thank them for the time they took to fill your fill if you want to be a nice person/ keep the community active. If they're doing something blatantly wrong, like a repeated grammar or spelling or canon mistake, you could even give them some (kindly phrased) concrit.

But if the fill really wasn't your cup of tea, I don't think there's too much shame in not responding. Or at least, no obligation if you're anon. For all the filler knows, you've forgotten you wrote the prompt at all. Or are just really busy. Plus, someone else might come along and really appreciate the fill in all its badly written, OOC, unsexy-to-you glory.

If you prompted un-anon though, you really should respond if you want to continue posting in the community without looking ungrateful.

Depends on how innocuous you think you can be about a response.

"If you can't say somethin' nice... don't say nothin' at all."

Say "OP, here, thank you for filling my prompt." and leave it at that. Encourages fillers and activity without mentioning the quality of the fic at all.

On that note: FML.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-31 04:34 am (UTC)(link)
I recently wrote something as a pinch-hit for a fest and while I wasn't happy about the quality (I was only able to (quickly) revise the fic once and that is just not how I roll. I tend to put more effort into the editing process than I do writing the first draft) I had to submit it anyway because of the deadline.

The recipient wrote me a comment that simply said "thank you" and I felt absolutely miserable. Like, I know it wasn't the best but I tried, y'know? The original writer dropped out three days before the deadline and no one else volunteered so I stepped in so the recipient would receive something, even if it wasn't a masterpiece.

I wasn't expecting a paragraph full of praises, I really wasn't, but that comment...well, needless to say I regret having bothered now. It simply wasn't worth the hit to my confidence.

OP, just be nice, okay? Even if the fic is terrible the writer (who is a person) is still putting effort into it. There are loads of things you can come up with that aren't outright lies.

Re: On that note: FML.

I'm sorry that happened to you. :(

Not everyone goes into those things with the same attitude.
On behalf of someone who didn't receive anything from the last fest I participated in - thank you for jumping in at the last minute! I can't even finish a short fic in less than a week, so you deserve all the awards.

Yeah, I just had this problem. I had this great prompt that I found really hot, and got an absolutely terrible fill. I haven't written fic in years and don't know how to write smut but even I could have done better.

(Which kinda pissed me off, because now it's very unlikely that anyone else will do another fill AND I LIKED THAT PROMPT DAMMIT)

I just said 'thanks for filling this' and found one thing that I didn't hate and praised it.

"Thanks so much for filling this!"

Because that's what you're grateful for - that someone filled it at all, not necessarily what they filled it with.
