I recently wrote something as a pinch-hit for a fest and while I wasn't happy about the quality (I was only able to (quickly) revise the fic once and that is just not how I roll. I tend to put more effort into the editing process than I do writing the first draft) I had to submit it anyway because of the deadline.

The recipient wrote me a comment that simply said "thank you" and I felt absolutely miserable. Like, I know it wasn't the best but I tried, y'know? The original writer dropped out three days before the deadline and no one else volunteered so I stepped in so the recipient would receive something, even if it wasn't a masterpiece.

I wasn't expecting a paragraph full of praises, I really wasn't, but that comment...well, needless to say I regret having bothered now. It simply wasn't worth the hit to my confidence.

OP, just be nice, okay? Even if the fic is terrible the writer (who is a person) is still putting effort into it. There are loads of things you can come up with that aren't outright lies.

I'm sorry that happened to you. :(

Not everyone goes into those things with the same attitude.
On behalf of someone who didn't receive anything from the last fest I participated in - thank you for jumping in at the last minute! I can't even finish a short fic in less than a week, so you deserve all the awards.
